Dear CD's.
I propose to see Las Vegas next month. I will be taking 10 days leave and drive to Las Vegas. I propose to see mainly the beautiful buildings/ Airport/ Casino's etc... I am not going there to gamble.
Any idea as to how costly it can be?
Are entries to Casino's free? Do they offer any Freebies like Gas to entice people to come to Las Vegas?
Any one , who knows about Las Vegas and who has visited it may please reply.

Peace

My thoughts...

How costly it could be ?
Roughly for about $70, you could get good hotels if you shop in orbitz, sidestep.com, hotels.com too.

Are entries to Casino's free? Do they offer any Freebies like Gas to entice people to come to Las Vegas?
Most of the big casinos I visited didn't charge anything. Not sure about the freebees, try the websites.

I drove twice from San Francisco and then once from Phoenix.

To my feeling, Las Vegas is much hyped and I found it not so interesting to visit with a kid. Hotel deals aren't as expensive as here in Toronto and the casino entrance is free for at most all the Casinos I visited. I think it has become more of a forced break rendezvous among youngsters in US, Most perhaps, I wasn't aware of the hidden pleasures of Las Vegas. I never tried the Gambling part there, as it wasn't my pleasure.

I think there are lot of attractions for bachelors. In terms of weather, It used to be deadly hot in summer. You better be prepared considering your August travel.

Good thing about LV is that you can drive to the Grand Canyon which is about 3 hours of drive from Las Vegas. Also in Las Vegas, there is a tall tower with adventure sport like Stratosphere, I was little scared to try as I do not enjoy free fall. I backed out.

Cheers.

I guess JRF covered everything. The only thing I would like to add that I would not drive to LV from TO. Flight would be a much better option.

Do not drive. You can find excellent flight/hotel deals for LV. Its very far from Toronto. You are looking at 4-5 days of driving.

We went out there in December and neither I nor my spouse are into the gambling or drinking.

Lots of really nicely themed hotels to see and take pictures of. Buy a ticket on a tourbus to Grand Canyon. Its easier than driving there and there are some small stops on the way.

The food is good in the buffets, but not very cheap. You can get cheaper (but fast food) around the main strip. There is lots of shopping - both discount and high end (Ceaser's Palace).

Its really not a place take your child.

Also - try to stay right on the main Strip. There is enough walking to do and if you stay even a block of strip, it can be pretty run down.

with family in vegas try circus circus (www.circuscircus.com)...family themed hotel lots of kids. One of the largest indoor amusement parks.
The hotel itself is a bit cheaper. Rooms are ok. You can catch circus acts from the eateries. You'll get better rates if you can schedule your visit on weekdays and 'non-convention'(many corporate events/conventions are held there) times.
In any case most of the rooms are cheap since they expect to recover that on the gambling.

About the buffets take care...once there was a salmonella outbreak if I remember right. The cabbies may have info on that...but really its not like an everyday occurrence but the negatives always stand out.

This time of the year the outside attractions e.g: Grand Canyon, hoover dam etc are really hot...with kids take extra care. Its the desert.

Night times on the strip are probably a better bet in summers...lights/treasureisland show/bellagio fountains etc.

Love Vegas.

The cost and time of driving to Las vegas are not worth it. It is cheaper to go to Buffalo and then take a flight to Las Vegas. Try to take the flight on Monday as usually flights during the weekend are a little more expensive sometimes.

I guess a return ticket to Las Vegas from Buffalo would be under $300, so for a couple it would be $600 (incl. Buffalo parking) ....... you would spend more money on just gas if you drive upto Vegas.
