Hi folks, thanks for all your encouraging response, any suggestions on the use of own car or to use a rented car?
any reason of not using own's car with respect to advantages of using a rented car.

Depends on your situation.
If you own a new car and want to see that it lasts for years, then it is better to take a rented car.
OTOH, if you belive that you want to save money (on the rented car) and also if your car is a bit old and you donot see a fantastic resale value and if you plan to scrap it in a number of years (my case) then use your car.
If the trip is long and you are bound to travel in some pot holed area / rough road area and it is going to affect the suspension of your car for sure. Also tires would get worn out much faster as you drive for long periods of time at a stretch.
Most people use rented car's when the bill is paid by someone else. I am not sure of what situation that you are in. Do a cost benefit analysis and decide.
Recently on a trip to -Detroit, my car went through a pot hole and thus the bush got damaged. It makes noise whenever the car travels over rough roads.In my case, As I have anyway decided to trash my car, I actually donot care.

How ever Had I taken a rental car in this case, it would have cost me atleast $100 or so( + gas). So each time I take a long trip, I sort of put the moeny that I might have actually spent on a rental car to the depreiciation of my car. Over a period of certain years, it would actaully cover the book value of my car .

Hope this helps and not confuses much more.

Peace

Hi Friends;

My experience of driving with rented car to US always has been, more questioning while crossing border. So little more time required in explaining but no big hassle if they find reason satisfactory. At one time it was lot of questioning however on 'Why I rented when I have 2 cars in my name ...'. May someone on board explain.

-Ben
