I want to bring my parents to Canada for a visit. They live in Punjab, India. How many months before do I have to apply to have them here? They are currently visiting my sister in the Gulf. Do they have to be in India at the time I apply for their visa?

Yes they have to be in India, if they are a Indian citizen. In some cases they ask for medical examination & very rarely they also go with personal interview. The main reason is you have to submit passport along with the application.
Normally you can apply 3 months before the date you are planning for them to land here. In most cases they give them a 3 month visa validation (some cases even 6 months). That is the time within which they have to land here.
And after they land here the officer can stamp a visa to stay here for 6 months or depending upon the situation.
The visa process normally takes 7 days(cases without medical exam) or can take upto 30 days(with medical examination).
Canadian consulate in India is only in Delhi and Chandigarh.
Has anyone had experience of dealing with these VFS office centers in 9 cities including Mumbai and bangalore?
Do these centers guide folks [considering the parents are applying and there is only so much we can do from here]?
Also, on what basis do they decide on 3 versus 6 month visa validity?
How does this work? Let's say one would like the person to visit Canada say next year spring/summer? Can they apply 6 months before , say in Oct/Nov of this year? If they do, what would be the visa validity period? starting Oct or can they indicate that the visa validity start in Feb/Mar09?
If they get a 3 month visa validity from Oct, does that mean they have to start that travel between that 3 months but still be able to stay for 6 months from the day they fly into canada or have to leave canada at the end of that 3 month validity?
Any insight would be helpful?
