Hi,
Could anyone give me some information regarding where to go about to get permission to arrange a candle light vigil for Mumbai Terror attack victims. We are group of friends who would like to do this in Toronto and we don't know where to get information. Any information/assistance will be appreciated.
Thanks

I received this on email from one of my jewish friends.

Dear XXXX,

In the aftermath of the devastating terrorist attacks in Mumbai, Toronto's Indo-Canadian community and Jewish community invite you to join a solidarity rally against terrorism.

Freedom From Terror: Standing Together with India, Remembering Mumbai's Victims on Sunday, December 7 from 2:00 - 3 pm at the International Centre (6900 Airport Rd, south of Derry Rd) Mississauga.

The Canada India Foundation and the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce have partnered with UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy (CIJA), Canadian Jewish Congress and Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee (CJPAC) to organize this urgent event to express an unequivocal anti-terrorism message, in solidarity with the people of Mumbai.

Nearly 200 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded in last week's terrorist attacks on Mumbai. Victims came from all countries and faiths including six Jewish hostages inside Mumbai's Chabad Centre.

For more information on the rally, please e-mail: mumbai @ ujafed.org

Hiren

PS : AFAIK, you dont need any special permission for peaceful rallies. You might run into trouble if disrupt traffic or any business. Impromptu candlelight vigils have been observed for so many people in Toronto - the latest case of teenager lost in Barrie.

Hi Hiren,
I went to the candleight vigil a the Intl centre yesterday.
It was quite well done. As you entered they had a form for you to fill for any suggestions you might have to combat terrorism. Then onto tables where u cud light a candle.
Lots of people from the media were there incl. lotsa TV stations.

Pictures of the events of the 3 days were flashed on two huge screens on either side of the hall, incl the the now infamous one on the terrorist in cargos facing to one side with a machine gun and the inch thick orange band on his right wrist.Lots of fotos of the burning Taj.
The main organisers were Canadian-Indian Foundation and the UJA(Jewish group with about 70 co-sponsors from different religious groups incl Christian, Sikh, Muslim, Hindus, Jews and a lot of non-religious affiliated organisations.
The one thing that grabbed a lot of peoples' attention was that there was no Parsi organisation as co-sponsor seeing as how the main image flashed at the outset of the attacks were of the the Taj (that belongs to the most prominent Parsi family- the Tatas) burning. It was only after CNN learned that Nariman house was of the Jews that they turned their attention to that.

Anyway as the vigil got underway headed by Jake Dheer and Angie Seth, images of Sep 11, 2001 NYc, then Bali 2002, then Madrid 2004, then London 2005 were flashed on the screens. It was well attended by some heavy politicians and prominent business people of the Indian community. The new consulate -general of India was there, Ujjal Dossanjh, Navdeep Bains, Gurbax Malhi, Harinder Takhar, Kullar, John Tory, Jason Kenney and many more. Didn't see Ruby Dhalla though. They had several of them come up on stage to light candles for each one of the dead and name them.

And there was this one dude in the audience who sported a T-shirt Mumbai United.

Anybody else who was there and care to share his/ her experience?

The hall was packed. Maybe some seats to the side were empty but o/w at first glance it was a full house.

Did u go Hiren?

Yes, I was there. I was standing next to the tables where they were lighting the diya's with the candle in the back, infront of the press cameras. You have put in a good description of the events though. A chill ran dwon my spine when one of them dedicated thier candle to ATS chief Hemant Karkare - there was spontaneous clapping in the audience. I am not sure if the names read out by the people lighting candles on stage were selected by themselves or alloted to them via random draw - but found some mismatches.

Very nice experience indeed - returned with 2 Indian flags in my pocket.

Hiren
