Is it allowed to carry nuts (cashew, almonds etc) with you to India from Toronto?

Think so.. I have done it many times...

Why not? Unless the insects/germs/organisms present in nuts can harm the ecological balance or can spread a disease in India

I think the website of Customs and Central excise in India has a list of what you can bring in and what not.

I think Canadian government discourages travellers from bringing food or such other items, as it can create similar issues here.

Personally, I do not bring any sweets or other such "wet" food products when I come back from India
