Your consignment shouldn't be freight on board. That's an excuse to charge money. You must move back on TR (transfer of residence), then there's no customs issue.
Ship your consignment to the address where you want it delivered, not till the port city (like Mumbai).

To BM 14,
I have already replied to your other thread but I will reply your concerns here.

Use the mover that I had mentioned. I got $ 1600 quote in (2011) for a LCL. However I suspect that you may get max. $ 3000 to $ 4000.

Always ship to a busy port and not to your door. You may save $ 1000. Say you are in mumbai, you will pay Max. 20,000 to get it out. Agents are there for that.

The mistake that I did was that I took delivery in a small port in TN where since there was no much freight I had to pay heavy duty. Next mistake was that I had to ship to Kerala. So the transportation cost me Rs 9,000+ union unloading charges of Rs 2500. They caught my stuff at the Kerala border. The border agents wanted to levy a tax of Rs. 40,000. I took my cdn. passport and told them that I will complain to my embassy of harrassment. Once they saw it, they let me through without any fine. So the moral is , donot do any cross state transportation. For example, if your location is in Delhi and your port in is mumbai, you are in soup.

Again as suggested, you may think of lessening the load. We get very good dining tables, bed's here. Even Sofa's are OK. Sofas are around Rs.70,000 for the entire set of rexin. But brick stuff looks better.

Interesting thread, I will watch out this space.

For Engineers in Non IT, Especially with some years of experience, it is not great to start all over again. The foreign experience will be quite valuable in getting a better deal with Indian Companies.
Ageing Parents and Concern over French Schooling for kids are also factors.
