I agree with Aashu
This SM was made by British & focus was on India's slum
This Goras like to see such things in movies. Yes Big B was correct in that sense.
Any way I am happy for AR Rahman. He is too good.
But why he was speaking in Tamil even in USA ?
It could have been best, if same thing was said in Hindi

I personally loved and enjoyed this movie. I don't think it has anything to do with showing India in poor light. Do you blame 'Swaroop', who wrote this novel? How many people do you find criticizing the novelist - an Indian, who first composed this piece? You bet, not a single one. Just because, an Englishman adapted a story from an Indian - makes him a villain.
So guys, here's my question to all of you who didn't like the portrayal of India's slum by an Englishman. Did you all rejoice when Lagaan was nominated? Yes - all did. It also showed India's villages, poor people etc. It was made by our own desi director. So, who objected? No-one. And, who objected when Mother India was nominated. Directed by our very own Desi director. Today people talk about Mother India as a legendary tale. Didn't it show India's poverty. Agree, not in slums but in villages. But, poverty is a poverty. No?
So, I despise the double standards. And talking about Big B - Ah! He has already lost his acting, era, and respect from his fans. I would ask if he would've been approached to play the Anil Kapoor's part. Would he still react the same way? Everyone knows the answer. So, maybe it's his agony and jealousy that's spurting out.
Watch a movie for what it's for - Entertainment. Period.

I agree with Aashu's point. India is much more than just people living in slums. But the problem is that a middle class or a rich Indian's life may not be appealing to middle class western audience.

Hollywood has been going down the toilet for quiet some while now. This year's nominations show how irrelevant and out of sync Hollywood has become from mainstream. Most people don't care for these nominated films. By abandoning its mainstream masala movies and trying to become artsy-fartsy, it has shot itself in the foot.
Oscar awards/nominations have become nothing more than filler blurbs in newspapers. Last year's ratings for the show were at an all time low. Only Heath Legers death stirred some interest in this years show.
