A lot depends on whether you are moving permanently or temporarily i.e. going back soon after landing.
If you will be going back, then no need to open a bank account.
But if you will be staying here and working, then start with a chequing and savings account.
Most chequing accounts have restrictions and fees so you have to select the one that meets your needs with lowest fees.
Normally by maintaining some minimum balance you can avoid the monthly fees.
Online only banks like PC Financial and ING have no fee chequing accounts but at the same time do not have branches so it's a trade off.
Open a chequing account where you can avoid fees by keeping $1,000 or $1,500 minimum balance and allows you at least 10 debits per month.

Any of the big chartered banks should be good enough and there really isn't that much choice.
So RBC, TD, BMO, Scotia Bank, CIBC are all about the same.
The online banks are PC Financial (in Loblaws and Superstore) and ING Direct.
