Hi All,

I am driving from Atlanta to Toronto on May 25th and planning to enter Canada via Detroit or Niagara falls.

I am already received my PR cards. I am currently driving alone with 1-2 suitcases. All my lugguage is getting shipped from US later once I get a house in Mississauga. What are the documents required and type of questions that I shall face in the border.

DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING IN THE BORDER TO CROSS OVER. I plan to change the title of my cars once I get settled down.

Car Documents
----------------
1) Title Paper
2) Insurance paper
3) Sale Deed

Documents from my end
--------------------------
1) Indian Passport
2) Canadian PR Card
3) Offer letter of my company (if I receive it on time)
4) Luggage details (List of stuff I am bringing through)

What are the typical questions asked..and what answers to tell and what answers to avoid (Any tips on this).Any tips appreciated for those who drove and came in to Toronto ? Which entry is better..via Detroit or Niagara falls.

I would tell them that I am a Canadian PR and immigrating over to Canada. Family and Lugguage are following suit once I get settled down.

Regards,
Rajan.K

Do you mean PR card or PR visa?
If you have the card, that means you have already landed once and must have the stamped Goods-to-Follow list.

You will have to pay a fee for moving the vehicle.
It used to be about $75 - check the RIV site.

I am confused - have you landed before or not?
If you have, then none of this applies.
You are simply a PR coming back and will not face much questioning.

Hi Pratick,

I landed in Canada last year. I told them that I am planning to relocate this year and just had come to see schools/good areas to relocate. Did not give them any "list of goods to follow".

I received my PR cards by December 2008. Now I have got transferred to my company in Toronto and driving on 25th from Atlanta.

Planning to give them a list of items to follow (shall be shipped by some movers) and details of my other car also (my wife will drive it once I settle down in Toronto).

Just wondering what types of questions would be asked in the border and what documents are required from my side now.

Regards,
Rajan.K

Then everything you are taking with you now is subject to import duty, including the car.
Did you not know about the Good-to-follow list?

Not much really. You are a PR now and have the PR cards.
So from immigration perspective you are ok.
At most they may ask you how long you have been away.
The main question would be around the items you are bringing with you since you don't have a stamped good-to-follow list.

Prathik.

No one mentioned me about the goods to follow list last time. When I landed in Canada last year, they told me there is no issues and I need to get the list when I am landing in Canada.

Is it necessary to show the goods to follow list when you land the first time..?? or you can show it later when you land finally. Can you send me some URL links to study this process.

All,

Read the following. "You have to pay the regular duties on any goods you import for commercial use, including:

farm equipment;
vehicles;
other capital equipment you use or will use in construction, contracting, or manufacturing; and
other goods you use or will use commercially or in a trade. ".

Hence worse-comes-to-worse, I may have to pay import duties for my car. Do I need to pay for my household stuff, jewellery etc.

Regards,
Rajan.K
