VANCOUNVER: Four white Canadians were on Tuesday charged with a racial assault on a group of Indians at Langley on the outskirts of
Vancouver.
According to police, the six Indian-origin men were playing tennis at the weekend when the four suspects approached them and started shouting \"racially based expletives.''
The assailants, who included three young men and a woman, went on to pull fence boards even as they continued shouting racial \"obscenities and threats.''
Police said: \"The suspects attempted to enter the tennis court which was now barricaded by the tennis players. They were able to force their way into the tennis court and intimidated the victims until they were backed into a corner.
\"One of the suspects threw a fence board at the group of tennis players hitting one of them in the head.''
Before fleeing, the assailants took away personal belongings of the victims.
They were later arrested and the stolen belongings of the Indians recovered, police said. The suspects were on Tuesday formally charged with assault with a weapon, robbery, causing physical harm and uttering threats.
While 19-year-old Rodney Mercieca was remanded to police custody till his bail hearing June 12, the three others - Lesley Rothwell, 18, and two boys aged 15 and 16 who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act - were released to appear in court later.
All the six victims come from the nearby city of Abbotsford where Indians, mostly Punjabis, constitute about 25 percent of the city's population of about 100,000.
The provincial police's hate crime unit is also involved in the investigation.
In the recent past, the Indian Canadian community in the Vancouver has been subjected many deadly racial attacks.
Two elderly Sikh men were killed in two separate attacks by white youths at a park in the city of Surrey near here five years ago.
Earlier, another elderly Sikh, who worked at a temple in Surrey, was also killed in a racial attack.
This will never happen in Canada. The country is multicultural and everybody knows it and respects it.
There might be a few guys here and there who will try to create trouble.
I'm not justifying the attacks, but paraphrasing how we create our own problems.
GTA will be BROWN by 2017. Who is the majority then?.
Will a white guy go and complain that he was racially assaulted by brown?.
I sincerely feel that most of the attack is not being thrown on us but we create situations to receive it.
Why do you have signs posted in many public locations about not spitting tobacco or paan here?.
Why do not we stay in line and wait for our turn in place of cutting line?.
Why do we go and park in handicapped parking or baby on board parking?.
Why do we start speaking in Hindi, Gujarati, tamil or even urdu in public places when we have a crowd of others around?.
Many of my white friends know all the swear words in hindi and punjabi. Many times when a desi guy passes a comment in hindi they understand it.
Every desi guy calls the black person as Kaala or Kaali in a derogatory sense. The secret is most of the West Indian immigrants know what it means.
If you closely look at what is happening in Australia, the older residents/immigrants from India are not supporting this protest. Please read many a blogs to find out the mess some of these students are creating. Many of them are coming out in underwear to the sit outs in their apartments and are urinating in public. They are playing the hindi film music loud in the subway and talk loudly with friends in their mother tongue.
Yesterday I was in a local Food Basics in Mississauga and I assume a Pakistani gentleman came to the store with his religious clothes like they wear in SWAT valley and was shopping there. Everybody including many a Desis passed him and gave him a discerning glance. If you go to any a elementary school in Mississauga you will find many a Desi parents literally in their desi clothes with hawaii chappal collecting their children. How much time will it take to put a pair of jeans or a decent shirt with a pair of sneakers to pick their children from school.
If you recollect the Srilankan Tamil guys who conducted protests in Ottawa, misused the Tim Hortons restrooms there in Ottawa and they were closed down. These guys later defecated in the parking lots in open and it became a major headline news in Ottawa.
We should blend in and not stick out as a sore thumb.
If you do not understand what I'm writing please visit Brampton or Mississauga on a weekend and you will observe what I'm mentioning.

I agree with the above that it will never happen in Canada. We have enough representation here in Parliament for one, and also majority of Caucasians already mingle well with us.
As for the attack, it was reported to the Police right away from someone watering thier frontyard and the attackers were nabbed. Heard something like this in Aussie land?
So, don't worry - we are safe in Canada. I worked with Aussie clients in my past job in 2006-2007, and right then I knew there was something wrong with their attitude.
By the way, we have another thread going on this topic. Why create this one???
I think it is very important for Indians to integrate with the community also. Indians tend to stick to their own (much like many other communities) which leads to alienation.
Many people on this forum (including myself) can't claim to have many non-desi friends .. even if few.
I used to live in Kenya where the Indians and local Africans have not integrated at all .. totally like 2 nations in one country. Eventually there are problems.

What do you mean by desi clothes? Whats wrong if I feel comfortable in Hawaii Chappal & Pyjama. Its my body and I wear what is comfortable to me. I am not going out disturbing/killing anyone. Not wearing revealing clothes.

Its hard to say where the balance is, but I think if people stop and stare then you should change a little to blend in. After all you wont wear a kurta to work. But people wear kurtas to the temple or social gathering and no one cares.
When goras wear those gothic clothes even then people stop and stare.
I think its with people's mentality. SOme people try to mix and even if they are in a Kurta you can tell they are blending in. then some people cant just mix and the Kurta makes it worse.
