Hi
We are coming on work permit (1 year validity with possibility of extension). Does anybody know what are the rules for bringing the car and household furniture?
1. Do I have to pay the import duty and other taxes at POE?
2. When I am returning do I HAVE to take everything back? Or I can dispose of those things after a year?
3. Will there be penalty if for some reason I have to leave the country before one year and not able to take those things back?
appreciate your help guys

Thanks cdn_dude and Freddie.
We called up the customs # today and all they said is pay the duty n taxes and you are good. The taxes are coming up to be around 2k on our ford escape 07. So we are selling it of here and will be buying one there. As for the rest of the household items they said we are good without paying any taxes. Except we cannot import the mattress and crib mattress too. So we are not getting the rest.. no point in getting just the bed frame.
Next thing we are researching now is if there is any tax if we transfer our money from us to canada. Does anybody know the rules/regulations regarding money transfer on work permit?
You have done the best ting there is under the conditions. Now try and get rid of the rest of the things. Shed all that you can Pots and Pans etc., too.
If it fits in your wallet, then nothing to worry about.
Now you are ready to travel to Canada. Come down a day early, I know I know, you have to be at the border on a certain day...
There are no taxes on funds that you bring into Canada. Canada is the Best Tax Haven of the world. Only you pay fifty percent on your earnings, or there abouts...
Do not collapse out the 401K there, but slowly dissolve them, by a year at a time.
You will love it up here, but you first will have to cross the border and settle down.
Good Luck to you,
Freddie.

Yes my husband is of the same opinion, However his employer is paying for the move, so might as well take the essential household and kitchen stuff. One corner of mind is kind of worrying, about what to do with these stuff, if you cannot dispose them off. When we talked to customs they said whatever you get on work visa, in principle everything has to leave the country when you leave. We don't know which country we will be next, so there is no guarantee that the company will pay for move then. So we are not bringing our car but we are getting all our household items with the plan we will pay the duty at that time and dispose those off.

Yeah, we checked with our existing employer, since emp.y remains same, it seems we cannot dissolve it as of now. Do you know any options in this case?
Di you tell them that you are coming on a work visa? This is very important point to consider while considering your customs duty on your car.>>
Yes, we told them we were coming on work permit. There is no duty on this, however we were playing kinda defensive and wanted to pay the duty so that the car doesn't have any restrictions.
