Dilemma is .. I am talking with an Organization for a job prospect ... And I have plans to visit India for around 2 months in Nov - Dec .... So ...

a. Either I join the job ( if I get it ) .... and then after completing 3 mos ask for a leave citing what ever reasons ... Paid / Unpaid does not matter ...

OR .

b. I compromise my chances of even getting in , by blurting this out in the discussions / interview and letting them know in advance .. Wonder how they will take it ......

Which way would you advice ???

Approach it carefully during the interview. Be upfront. your potential employer will value your honesty and it will show that you are considerate of the business needs of the employer. They will not penalize you for an overseas trip that you planned before you were hired, but be prepared to negotiate - can you shorten your trip if they need you back sooner? Be prepared to be flexible. The power is in their hands at this point.

You should tell them about plans to travel to India while negotiating the offer. Agree with Dimple.

Tell them upfront & be flexible. 2 months is very long leave.

Cheers & enjoy your job & holidays :)

I do not think they need to fire. If they do not approve, what will you do?

If they say they will not approve 2 months and instead offer you maximum of 2 weeks due to your circumstances, what will you do then?

Thanks a lot Folks for helping me decide .

I don't even know whether I will get an offer at this stage but thought it wise to pre decide the approach on the visit ..

I know 2 mos is long but there are certain commitments that I need to meet ..

It appears being upfront is the approach to take .

And Yes RajCanada .. you are right ... I could say nothing and would be in a worse state .......... All along it makes sense to disclose this now and then let them take a decision .... if we reach that stage .

Thanks once again :)

Personally, I like it to be upfront. In past, I have asked manager to wait till weekend, as I was waiting on one another offer. I told him the complete story. I could ask only weekend because he wanted me to start next day. At the same time, he did tell me that he will line up the resource. I hope I have not burn the bridge but I was honest with him :)

Let's say ...
You ask employer to wait for 2 months ... they agree for it. Employer is all excited to have you, working in background preparing your arrival.
While you are in India working - starting to get used to the life n work. You find work interesting and decide to stay back.
What will you tell guys here? "Oooppsss ... too bad, but sorry I am not joining ... you were stupid to wait for me ????

All the best ...

This makes a lot of sense .. Thanks .

Fido,
It is recession times. The employer can get a dime to a dozen employees (even IT) unless you have a skills set that very few others have.
if you are upfront, the employer will just move on to the next candidate. Esp. in IT and at this age who wants to give you 2 months off after just 3 months.
My position would be this :
1. Get the job by saying that you are commited to stay a long time in Canada and that you actually want to pay taxes to help Canada.
2. work for 3 months. By this time you will have a better understanding of the company. after 3 months you can make one of the 2 choices.

a. Be upfront. If they really like you they may wait for 2 months for you.
b. play the emotional card. Say that you need to be in India for some emotional reason. they may grant you the leave.

I hope you know that as per employment standards act of 2000 (which all companies are to follow), your employer can relive you of your duties at any time with notice as per the act. However for service less than 1 year, it is immediate.

If some one in CD does not belive me, please browse redflagdeals.com. Even there native born people say that no employer will hire you (even if you are native born) if you say the OP's truth.
Judge wisely. We are a minority in this country.

Peace by TK
