To the OP -
Compared to the Indian take home salary you would have quite a decent jump in the take home in Canada. If you are a 2 person family you should be able to save decent after the tax cuts. If you are more than a 2 person family then too, with sensible expenses, you could save a good chunk.
Suggest that you get your PR & the citizenship (plus the OCI) and till then you'd have understood the work culture & can go with the Pro points which matter most.
Good Luck!!
Thanks everyone for your useful comments. I appreciate your taking the time!
bombayduck62: Yes, I love my cake, preferably with fresh cream What are the struggles in your job? I'd be keen to know. Taxes and mortgages are indeed part of life. However a NET monthly pay of li'l over $3500 after taxes and deductions in QC for a gross pay of $6000 was a bit surprising for me.
dimple2001: Thanks for the tip and sounding out the pitfalls! I'd like to try it out here. It is clearly a cultural preference for me, especially at the workplace. It no longer seems to be a clear financially beneficial choice though. What was the politics, nepotism that you came across in the Canadian system? I'd be curious to know.
pokiri: That is what I was thinking too. Better to regret something you did rather than regret something you didn't do.
Fido: For citizenship, does it take 3+ years after PR? I'd thought the requirement was 3 years overall and at least a year with PR.
Blue_Peafowl: I hope it pans out well. Thanks!
unitz: I was not sure how you thought Canadian salary was a decent jump over the Indian one? The way I worked it out, there was just a difference of 50K rupees or thereabouts in annual savings, in favour of the Canadian $$$, after accounting for all expenses including flight tickets. Having said that, it would be much easier to move to a significantly higher paying job in India, where as in Canada I'd very likely stick to my current employer for another 2 years at least until I go through the PR process and thereafter too the salary was not expected to rise significantly. Thanks for the encouraging words - they surely help
Hi Kaps,
are you the same kaps posting on britishexpat forum?? If yes, I would like to know what happend with all your work permit and PR applications?
For Montreal, keep in mind that for your spouse without knowing french, its nothing less than hell to find good job. Ontario is certainly better place. For Montreal, you will get rental apartment in almost half price than GTA and transport cost is not that high too. So taxes of QC doesnt matter much in terms of your earning and saving ratio.
I am not best judge for your India Montreal confusion though.
Considering your TDS is INR 20K PM, your net is INR 80K PM, whereas upon conversion of your Canadian net take home is INR 157K. That is nearly a 100% jump.
Agreed that you have expenses to start from scratch and your EMI for the Indian home plus any other commitments plus your annual excursion to India, plus all expenses are in CAD. In the end with your CAD salary you should most likely not feel the pinch or be required to do mandatory cutbacks in your expenditure.
In the end, its all about what matters most to you & your family in life and as you have rightly gauged that there won't be a king size saving while earning in CA. Canadian or Indian way of life is something that you can weigh upon your personal preferences.
If I was in your shoes and knowing the facts you have put forth, I'd try my hand Living in Canada, spending 5 years or more to attain citizenship and decide what I want to do for the rest of my life.
Interesting to know which way you would go, if possible do update us.
Good Luck!!
He has job offer in Montreal - even 60K is really good salary in Montreal because of reasonable living expenses – wife can go to school to learn French ( yet getting money from Govt)
In Toronto he has to find job first
So, if someone has job offer already then its better to move there.
Once in Canada , person can always move to different provinces

Ahh, my mistake. I thought he has job in Ontario too. But blue peafowl, govt doesnt pay to work permit holder's wife to learn french.
unitz - thanks! I should figure out what I'd do if/once I get the work permit and blog my experience on the forum if it could be of any help.
imwhoever - I did post on BritishExpats earlier. I had applied for a WP for an Ontario job too but got back a letter stating that the WP may be delayed. Later I got another job (Montreal) which looked more secure, more what I'd like to do and better paying. Interestingly, I have three work permits in process (current employer extension + Ontario job + Montreal job) at the moment. I am not eligible to apply for PR yet; I was only seeking information. I should apply for PR as soon as I am able to.
The French Q has been the moot ever since I got the M'treal offer. It seems there are only very very few English jobs in telesales/marketing. That should be good to start off with for wife, if she could get any of those. It is definitely going to be tough to land one though. She has some customer facing experience in the UK for whatever it is worth.
Blue_Peafowl: To start off with we will possibly do some self study to pick up French. Both of us have a remote background in reading and writing French since secondary school. But speaking is something else and neither has a clue when the pretty Francophones open their mouths on TV
