Friends

I have been offered a job in Halifax area at salary of approx 85K CAD/Annum after tax (I have 15 years of experience as a design proff in oil and gas industry) . Is this good or bad or OK salary. Job is on work Permit

Any idea: How much I can save per month after paying for 2 bed room house, decent life style for a family of 3 (me, wife and kid). I understand that education in canada is free. Is this correct.

Thanks

These are Decent wages for living comfortably above the poverty line. This is Canada forget about savings. This is not MiddleEast. Oil and Gas expirience is useful in Alberta too but right now there is a slow down even in Alberta.

What you are getting is a good deal . Esp @ 85 K after taxes.

Expenses for a family of 3 in halifax

1. Apartment rental (2BHK) $700/- to $900/- ( can be 3BR also in some areas )

2. Metro Transit Passes (monthly - assuming you woudl not be driving initially) CAD 60 per person .

3. Grocery and other living expenses - CAD 600/- to CAD 800/-

Browse Halifax in the forum and you can get other information reg the palce which has already been shared by other members . http://canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=13203

Someone mentioned that savings cant be made .lets do a quick math

800+1000 +400 (car expense ) ~ 2.5 K *12 = 30 K
85 K - 30 K = 50 K pa ~ (50 * 40) = INR 20,00, 000 per anum .... after taxes !

Thanks Fido

The actual location is Bedford. I think it is very close to Halifax. Is cost of living is same in Bedford in comparison to Halifax.

Any Idea about schooling cost. I have one kid age 8 years.

Thanks

Hi John

85K after tax deduction is a good salary. Living cost will be <1500/month for bachelor. If you are not interested to settle here, then better not to bring the family. Its' all upto you.

I think the expenses would not increase remarkably with family . Bedford is in Halifax Regional Municipality (20 mins from DownTown- well connected by Metro Transport ) and rents should be on the lower side . About ed - it is free for children ..but I aint sure in case of work permit. I will enquire and inform you.

I think its a good opportunity and you must come.

Cheers .

Rents in Bedford would be comparable or more than Halifax. Other than buses, 80, 86 there is not too much else available in terms of commuting to Halifax. But since you'll be working in Bedford, I would suggest getting some place on the North West outskirts of Halifax and commuting to Bedford by bus. If you have a car, you could stay in Dartmouth or Halifax.
