Fido, I bought Mazda 3.
I read lot of mazda forums and read from someone that u can get lower price than carcost.So I took about $500 off carcost and starting negotiating with dealers.1st they told me someone is lowballing me and I will never get the car at that price as its below our cost ......blah blah blah.
But later 2 dealer were ready to give me car at that price.Infact I got winter mats,1 oil change also included.
I m still not sure how they can give below carcost.What I think is dealer get some bonus kind of thing, so even if they give a car on zero profit, they will still get something.
1 TIP I can give is if anyone is planning to buy a new car.Start taking quotes at the begining of month and keep negotiating but don't buy untill 25th.End of the month, salesmen get more incentives to giveout as they want to close maximum deals.And try to talk to the GM directly.

Could you give a rough idea as to how much was the price reduced by using Carcost & 500/- .... 2K , 3K ? .... I do understand that this difference would be different for different cars .

I calculated.I eneded up getting about $1000 lower than carcost.And about $2000 origianlly quoted by the dealers.
Out of $1000, I think $500 was by fluke.I asked if I was eligible for 1st time buyers discount and they gave it to me.But next day afetr signing the contract, they called me to say that there was no 1st timer buyer discount by mazda and was given by mistake.But since it was already on papers, they honored it.But I know dealer did not go in loss for sure.
That is why I feel there is a good scope of discount below carcost.
