He said the majority of the students fare poorly at jobs and global institutions of higher education. "Thanks to the coaching classes today, the quality of students entering IITs has gone lower and lower," Murthy said, receiving a thundering applause from his audience.

Who cares anyways ?
Most of the IIT & IIM grads exit India and mostly work for foreign companies.
They get hired within campus recruitment by multi-national corps.
Most of them are of no use to India.
Exactly, who cares. IITs are a small minority in India.
It's better to shift focus on the overall Engg. education and the very quality of the students entering in/coming out of the majority of Engg. colleges. Even MBAs/PGDBAs have lost the zenith they once had, which every Tom, Dick, and Harry in India claim to be doing these days from those Apartment block and 'Gali-Nukkad' Business schools (literally).
Time for a complete overhaul instead of keep polishing those already shining stars, such as IIMs and IITs.
A few weeks back, happened to see the news item that there have been 8 suicides in the last 9 months from among the IIT students.
The reasons for these tragedies were discussed among the panel of experts which included former IIT Director Prof Inderesan and other alumnus. The Prof says that the JEE has outlived its utility and performance during the few hours of the examination is alone counted, rather than that during the whole academic year.
Another reason, with the spurt of the new IITs, students from rural back ground may find it difficult to cope with less familiarity in English. Lack of english knowledge should not be held against them. After all the mayhem committed in Jalianwalabagh, we should not feel shy to terrorise the english language.
The IIT students are the most brilliant. When they enter IIT it is after the grueling entrance exam plus their regular public board exams. At 16 or 17 they are suddenly thrown into a new environment, new language and city. Away from home and parents, this may cause them lot of mental stress, which may affect their performance. Lagging behind their batch mates should not be loss of self-esteem. Workplace is totally a different ball game. People who do well in studies are not equally successful in work place.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The recent IIT's are different from Old ones, earlier there were only five IITs, (IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur). Quality will be compromised when quantity increases abnormally. He is certain extent right but todays situation in India nothing can be controlled due to the economic boom.
Unfortunately the old IIT graduates are working in the USA not in India and I am not sure how he compared the about the todays graduates with previous qualities of IIT's.
On a related note, not a single Indian university has come up in the Times Global top 200 list.
http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2010-2011/top-200.html
This says India has a lot of catching up to do in education.
