Hi,

My wife immigrated to Canada in Feb 2012. We got married in 2011 and she was waiting for immigration [spouse sponsorship]. Does she need to file for tax before 30th April ?

Since she wasn't resident in Canada in 2011??

Most likely not. In the first page of the tax form, there is a question about when you entered Canada. Put the date she entered. Since that date appears to be in 2012, she can file taxes for the period Feb to Dec 2012 in the year 2013. Since it is a partial year, the deductions, credits, exemptions, etc, etc will also be prorated. Hope this helps a bit.

No, she does not need to file her return.
However, since you were married in 2011, even though she wasn't living here in Canada, you can claim on your tax the deductions for an eligible dependent.

I can confirm you can claim the deductions for eligible dependent on your return. Just ensure you don't claim WITB for her even if you're eligible.

Also ensure that you enter your marriage date on your return.
