McGuinty's offered a "bribe" to Elizabeth Witmer from Kitchener-Waterloo seat by offering her top position at WSIB but she had to resign as MPP if she wanted the post. She resigned as MPP and took up the WSIB post. Liberals thought they would win it this time in KW and secure majority but surprise, NDP candidate Catherine Fife won and Liberals finished third after Conservatives.

This is politics.
Remember before that John Tory had lost his seat in the election (religious school funding) and was without a seat. He managed to convince an MPP to resign on the promise that she will be given a plum post when the conservatives came to power (in the intermediate, she was given a high post within the conservative party command).
John Tory lost the crucial by election too and later resigned from the conservative party.
