This question has been answered before, but all of them seem to be old posts, so asking again.
What should be the family income (both husband wife working) for a comfortable living in Toronto.
I am currently in India and might move to Toronto as an intra company transferee. Before we take the plunge, I need to know if the whole unsettling a settling will be worth it or no. I will be working in Toronto... And estimated basic costs will be - 2br rent, child care for 2 kids(6 yrs, 2.5 yrs) and everything needed for a family of 4. We also hope to save some money ...so what is the magic figure..? We both work in IT with abt 10-12 years work exp...Thank you in advance :)

My other question is, can and my employer apply for an Open WP for my spouse, at the same time as filling for my WP? Can my spouse get the OWP before coming to CA(and without a SIN?)

Average family income in Toronto is around 70K per year so if you are getting around 5K per month, you should be okay. But there is a big catch in the monthly income and carry home salary. For example, if you yearly salary is around 100k, your monthly carry home cash will be around 5K after all sort of deductions including income taxes, CPP and other contributions.

Rent around $1500, child care for younger one around $1000, older one's after school care around $300.

I am under the impression that you are being moved lock stock and barrel with your family in tow. The Employer will foot all of the bills for your move and for your work permit etc., So, you have no problems with all of he paper work. Your WP is Employer based and taken care of by them. A OWP is not and will enable to work for anyone.

Having landed here, your spouse can get a work permit soon enough, after you have all of the papers in hand and a S.I.N. to get started. It will also take a few days to get settled for the Six year old in the school. If your wife also works for the same firm, then a W.P. will be in order. Otherwise a slight delay in getting one after settling down, might not be too long a wait. If you are looking for an OWP, then you should wait till you settle down, and apply on your own. Then work for any one and also from anywhere. (Home based too)*

I am sure you have all your priorities organized and all of the ducks in a row even before landing. If you have, then you have all of the answers and I can only supplement a few that you are asking here. The best part is: You have your family here with you when you land.

The tax man will welcome you both with open arms if and when your salaries exceed SIX figures per year. The best part is the kids will be saving right from the word go as they get all of the benefits too and Tax Free. You will have to train the two and a half year old and it will take some time. But there are day care centers that will help you too and at a cost. But ALL of the Expenses incurred are fully TAX Deductible. So, it is a plus.*

* Working from home and also taking care of a child at the same time will be much more productive and also financially beneficial too. It opens up a few choices.

I am sure you will miss your familiar surroundings and all of the help you are having there and so will the rest of the family. The value and the efficient use of time on hand will be the next topic I would like to introduce to you here. Also, you will learn to juggle a few items as time progresses like most of us have learned here and if you decide to join us here in Canada after you do your due analysis.

Good Luck with your DD and hope we have given you sufficient inducement here.

A few links are provided under, for your due consideration, but not to discourage.

I couldn't couldn't really really resist to write back how inaccurate your statements are and no matter how many handles change, the agenda to discourage a new immigrant never changes (wouldn't I be surprised it is the same old technique from school days).

I've worked in one of the top 5 companies, Fortune 500 too... It was evident from own eyes which is contrary to what you said. Its the same observation on my twice stint even with the public service. I even jokingly said, why the office (both business / technology) looking so imbalanced (you understand what I am talking about).

Its quite a breeze to interact with the second generation immigration kids at work and it is too pleasing to see how unbiased they are. Thanks to this great country that preaches such values at the root level as the kids attend their early school.

We've left India, for **** sake let us just carry over the good things we've learnt there and load it up with the good things here and drop all those excessive baggages. It just bothers me when some one throws a dagger in the already shaken heart of a new person coming on board, especially when the pattern is never ending..

Have a wonderful weekend and pleasant holidays.

Are they going to pay you by Canadian standards and a Canadian salary ,or is it some cheapo Indian BPO outsourcing company like TCS that is going to pay you by Indian rupees converted to Canadian Dollars.

I know lot of H1- B holders in US who are exploited by cheapo companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro in US. They are made to work like dogs and slaves and are nothing but software coolies doing some Coding and programming bull shit.

Whatever position both of you have in India, don't expect the same in Canada. If you are a Project Manager in India in IT, you will be at a lower level over here.

They might give you a Dummy position and title, but your responsibilities and job will be lower. Uneducated and Semi literate White people will be above you :) Corporate Racism is well and alive. If you want to kiss some White ass, come here or remain King in your country.

Why I don't see that 1/3 in the community of about 300-400 people diversified with people of different language / religious background. Perhaps just about 10-15 people have left and almost all of them bounced back. By the way, they are not all white collar / business owners. Some of them are doing very simple job (no offence meant), they live their life too...
