Hard work is only part of the equation. Luck/fate/karma - whatever you call it I guess makes a big difference. If it's only hard work then as K.Raj has mentioned there are other more qualified people like construction labourers, rickshaw pullers, etc. who would be far ahead of me in terms of "material success".
There are inequalities in the world i.e, there is no direct one-to-one relationship between success and hardwork.
I attribute everything in my life "to being in the right place at the right time" with great help from powers up above.
Regards
Daks

There is a 100 Mtr race and 10 runners started their racing. Have you seen all 10 winning and coming first. They all are different then each other on that day due to their performance on that day. One had to run fast to become no. 1. Our life and its challeneges are like this race, to become MAHATMA, ALBERT EINSTEIN or DHIRUBHAI, you will have to know how to win that race.

the event on the south african railway station gave us MAHATMA, it was never a mere LUCK factor which made him MAHATMA, we all know. WHAT HARDSHIPS HE UNDERWENT TO BECOME MAHATMA IS KNOWN BY THE ENTIRE WORLD.

Hey...I am not making my point...or boasting...but I thouight of putting my own point here... can you believe I am a non-graduate. When I completed my diploma, I had no choice but to lok for a job. It was the time of MBAs & Graduates competing for good jobs. TOday after 12 years of hard fought journey, I am working a branch manager with one of the most reputed finance company of INDIA and can you believe there are 15 MBAs reporting to me(with all my due respect to MBAs and the great degree)????...will you call this a mere LUCKKKKK...No my friend, if I recollect my old days, I am sure today of one fact at least, that it was my non-stop drivings and sloggings in the 46 degree heat of Gujarat made me this today not LUCK.

A person is never more on trial than in a moment of excessive good fortune.
Luck/hardwork/prayer/positive thinking/intelligence. Are any of us really 100% sure what the combinations are/should be?
What some consider luck(random chance) others may consider opportunity(borne out of diligence).
What exactly is the cutoff before a # of tries yields results, for it to be considered luck/opportunity? If it is ONE try then the person trying is luckier that the one that tried 2 times who is luckier than the person that tried 3 times etc. Does this mean that after one try it is opportunity? Or is it after 2 tries or after 10 tries. The answer, I guess, will vary with each of us. Some of us will say it is luck even after 10 tries because we know smarter people who have been trying 20 times...without results. So, depending on individual reasoning, its always varying degrees of LUCK /OPPORTUNITY/INTELLIGENCE etc rather than ONE ABSOLUTE. Does any of this really matter?
There are many successfull people who credit luck...while as many disbelieve in the same. It probably goes to show that there is no universally *correct* recipie. Probably also means that all of us are right.

Jake , you have put it very well. There is no "one" right view on this. Everyone has his own sense of reality.
All I will say to those who believe in deligence, keep trying till you succeed .
And those who rely on fate and luck ...Good luck.

This topic has been debated a thousand times but strangely we do not get any answer that is convincing .
Opportunity , hard work , intelligence ,right place at the right time , luck . It is a very difficult question, yes luck is very important, but what is luck. Is it some thing that happens with out any rime or reason?
My personnel opinion is that , no , luck just does not happen just like that , we think it is luck but deep under there is a reason for the happening or non happening of an event or situation . We just do not bother to analyze it and attribute it to luck.
On another level there is Karma; does any one know of the influence of Karma?
Does Karma have a part to play?????
