Hey! I am international student, planning to come to Vancouver. I am told, that it is mandatory to have insurance in BC, is it true? Is there some special insurance for students?

Thank you for your reply! I figured out, my college doesn't offer me any insurance. May be because It is private college..
Hello there!
If your college does not offer you any insurance (even it does, in British Columbia you will be covered by provincial health coverage with 3 months waiting period), so, in both cases, if you study at public or private school/college/university you should buy private insurance till your provincial health coverage will start to cover you. It is too risky to be without any insurance, there are expensive medical services in Canada. For example, One visit to the doctor can cost $170 dollars, Being hospitalized can cost you up to $3,200 per day. So, I suggest to pay a little now and save lot of money if something goes wrong later.
There are few private insurance companies, you can look at here http://arbetovinsurance.com/students_insurance/ and take advise from consultants. Choosing insurance company you should think what you would need, do you want to have dental coverage? May be are you planning to be pregnant? Do you have any serios pre-existing conditions? In according to your answers, you will chose some company or additional options, if you need. Do not waste time and money! Good luck!

Each year, thousands of students from around the world come to British Columbia to study. Even more come to learn English.
If you plan to study in B.C. for more than six months in a row, and if you are not a Permanent Resident, you will need a Study Permit to attend a school in B.C.
Study Permits are issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), but before you apply for one you must be accepted by a school in British Columbia. When you apply for your study permit, you will be asked to provide proof of your acceptance (such as an acceptance letter) from the school. You will also need to provide a bank statement or proof of loan to show that you have enough money to live and pay your bills while you are studying in British Columbia. You should apply for a Study Permit as early as possible, as it can take several months to process an application, depending on your home country.
Depending on your country of origin, you also may need a Temporary Resident Visa.
Apply for a Study Permit now.
Download application forms, and checklists from the CIC website.

Currently you need a student visa to enroll for long term studies. It also demands that you have IELTS prior to entry.
So, who ever is studying ENGLISH/FRENCH here in Canada are doing it on the sly, while in Canada as a VISITOR, or as an Immigrant needing ESL to upgrade their English skills., Or for Citizenship requirements. In which case, it will be provided free of charge.
This is not the topic in discussion, but just raised its ugly head.
