All the op wanted - was an accommodation for 15 days.... Within a budget.... To complete PR formalities.....He asked all the right questions.... Furnished/unfurnished/location etc...
Since the visitor is coming from the UAE - he is presumed to be reasonably well off.....even though he is on a budget (which is how it should always be)....
Yet, he was given advice about a food bank. How is that even applicable or relevant? Since we live in a society and are bound by cultural strappings - even if a desi was to use the food bank - it will be under extreme cases and discrete.
Who can or can't or who should or shouldn't use the services of a food bank or shelter - who are we to decide? Or anybody else for that matter? Why should desi's put up such a question to the whites (or whoever) on redflagdeals - which is presumably RELIABLE as a source?????
And to say that one must go there "to save one's hard earned money" - is a thought process that is very base and selfish.
To give the same advice to EVERYONE - shows inability to make judgement by inference - which makes the advice irrelevant and inapplicable. To try and prove it by "quoting" whatever - makes it worse......like fitting a square peg in a circle.
It is our duty and responsibility - on this forum - to give correct, factual and relevant advice to people who are new or don't know anything about Canada. These people take this very seriously and spend hours mulling over what is told to them (this from my personal experience). They make important decisions based on what is told to them....
Jitna poocha gaya, utnaa hi bataana chahiye.....
Don't try to rule by fear..... (Negative prachaar)...
Geetha,
You misunderstood.
When I came to Canada, for the first 2 months, I used to pay TTC fare on every bus that I took. I didnot know the concept of transfers and in fact used to pay $ 5 on each bus as I did not know that I could purchase it in TTC subways and also I did not know of a monthly pass. No one was there to educate me.
Now comes a desi from Dubai on a tight budget. For 15 days, he and his family has to eat , right? I am assuming that he might spend $ 30 a day (if he buys groceries and cooks). So this is $ 450. I am leading him to food banks where he can save $ 100 to $ 200 for the first 15 days,. So he will have $ 100-$ 200 to spend extra on his rent. May be he will get a more decent accomodation where he will enjoy.
I am not bringing my car to his house and taking him to the food bank and helping him with the registration. I am giving him ideas only. If he is lazy to cook, let him use a soup kitchen. Instead of filling the stomach of a junkie, let it fill the stomach of this honest and hard working man from Dubai. Who knows, he may come one day and buy a million $ home and contribute to the economy. As said before, Food bank bread and vegetables will be thrown away on friday evenings.
As you know, Govt. of canada does inflated probaganda to entice immigrants. No jobs are available in Canada for the immigrants (except IT, Finance and high tech jobs). Others will have to start with labour jobs and progress. It is a struggle. So we have to advise.

Advice is free – lessons I charge for!!
I came from India to Canada but before that I had worked in Nigeria, Saudi and Malaysia.
I went to the subway, say some 7 days after landing, but I could not see any explicit notice saying that TTC passes were there. I found it out only after 2 months and only in the 4th month did I buy a pass (I guess). This happened in 2002 so my memory is a little bit sketchy.
You gave the answer yourself to the OP's question. When in a new place, one would like a safe and clean place. He might not get that in his budget and I told him ways how he can save another $ 100-$150 and then put it on a safe, clean and Dubai working friendly place. I just hope he does not get caught in Uncle Pritam's place on the urge to save money as he would be given bunker beds and bed bug infected bedsheets.

The white people can say exactly to whom the food bank food should go. Also they can tell if the things kept out on a friday evening (as weekend is 2 days in Canada) can be left to rot and thrown into garbage.

Hello everybody,
It looks like my sinple question has created an argument here.
Thanks for all the valuable information provided by all you well settled desis.
Firstly, I would like to clarify that my initial enquiry was only to check what are the basic rates to get a decent accomoodation. However, since we are a family of 3 with a little boy, we managed to get a nice furnished accommodation at BombaySuites in Missisuaga for with $100 a day so abt 1400 for our stay. We are happy with that.
Thankfully, we are in a position to defenitely buy some groceries off the supermarket for abt 15 days and cook whenever we can.
We are surely coming back to Canada by next year as we need time to tie loose ends in Dubai and our primary aim on this trip is landing, PR and health card and other formalities and we are really not looking at being a "BRUDEN" on the economy and live off "FREE STUFF" as mentioned by a member in one of the posts.
We are doing fairy well in Dubai , well educated and moving to Canada only with a wish to lead a better life.
Any objective and helpful information which will help us finish our paperwork is welcome.
Thankyou
