Hi Guys
Do we need indian culture living in North America?
If you say 'yes' then why?
and if you say ' No' then why?
Guys,
can we discuss/debate on this topic?
I invite everybody to post your view.
Thanks
Kem Chho Motabhai....
Now, before I answer the question, I would like a small clarification from you.
Can you please define what do you mean by "Indian culture" ?... Once I get that answer...I am sure many folks here will participate..
Mind you, culture and traditions are different. So exclude any reference to "traditions"....

Hi,
Here is a defination of "culture" taken from "The Houghton Mifflin Canadian Dictionary of The English language"
'Social and intellectual formation; the totality of socially transmitted behaviour patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions and all other products of human work and thought characteristic of a community or population.'
Given this explanation of the word...I would have to say that "indian culture" is inevitable, it is what happens naturally when there is a group of indians, whichever country that they may be in. Is it necessary? Well, yes, I think so, otherwise we wouldn't be indian...we would have an entirely different culture altogether and be called something else.
What do you think?

Are you working hard, or hardly working?
Another defn of culture is:
The beliefs, traditions, habits, and values controlling the behavior of the majority of the people in a social-ethnic group
When we say Indian culture it encompasses a wide variety of social-ethnic groups. Are there one set of beliefs traditions, habits and values which we as Indians follow?

I have only 2 cents to contribute, not a cent more, not a cent less ;-)

Please do not misunderstand me as my replies may not gel well with other members but I am saying this because this was asked and I really would want to put in my 2 cents as I think about it after having lived in the US for 3 yrs now.
It is good that Canada promotes multiculturism. People from different cultures and countries come to Canada and make it diverse; it's good but it may not necessarily bring out the definite factors that make up a successful nation of immigrants.
My answer is NO. It should not be that we should have our Indian culture. Why? should we have one? Our choice to leave our country answers this question. Why did we leave India? Why did we come to Canada, we did not have jobs waiting for us so we can have no excuse to justify, it was our choice and we adopted Canada as our country to reside in for the rest of our lives.
BUT, my answer is NOT absolute, meaning that I do not say that we should not have Indian food, or Indian clothing or Indian way of walking, driving, working, eating, enjoying etc. Our lives should resemble most like the Brit/French immigrants basing this on our Indian fabric. Why should we not wear kurta/dhoti to work? Why should we not drive as we drove on the streets of India? etc Because when we contribute to a society we contribute as Canadian individuals driven by Canadian standards not as Indian individuals delivering through Indian standards.
Our Inner selves could be or should be Indian but that should not show on the surface.
This observation comes when I see people who in almost all spheres of work and society go through with the Indian connection attitude and therefore they do not become the powerful force in the society and do not make a lot of friends from the other pool of culture because they are so seeped into their own culture. This could be bad socially as it would not let us achieve the fruits of immigration.
