Fido, generally I have found TN difficult for visitors. It could be due to the language barrier as many there dont speak Hindi. Just my observation, maybe someone from TN can add more. Also, I noticed that the majority of people come across as very aggressive (behavior, mannerisms etc) ; just my observation. http://canadiandesi.com/post.php?action=post&FID=55
Surprising observations NY Desi and Fido. However as a Tamilian, I will reverse it from the point of a South Indian and share my observations.
As you know Tamilians are very shy and submissive people. When I see North Indians, I see them speak in Hindi and spitting paan. I myself get irritated when I see this. May be that is why we might feel irritated.
I am not telling this as a tamilian but it has been my general observations.
Chennai auto drivers are notorious for fleecing money from not only North indians but also from out of chennai residents. So that is not a big surprise.
Also note that tamil nadu is too hot and we donot have much water. These two factors make tamilians 10% mentally depressed. May be that is the reaction of a 10% depressed person. Luckily in Kerala, we tamilians are exposed to a lot of water and we are full mentally stable.

Yes, you have a point - heat maybe a factor.

Whenever we enquired about something some peoples were not very happy to answer---we felt like we were not in India--initially we tried to ask questions in Hindi--no answer--then we tried in English still not a friendly response instead they often tried to use finger/sign language to show us direction whenever we asked about some particular location.
Auto guy in Chennai insisted us to pay more rupees than he initially agreed.
Chennai is nightmare for visitors from north India--its extremely hard to find a north indian restaurant unless you know someone local.
we had no choice except eating Idali.
guy who served us stayed infront of our table till we tipped him in advance--then he left & we started eating.
Sorry to heat this .. I have heard from others (incl people from AP) also about discrimination in TN .. Wonder why that is so as generally I have not seen any discrimination of S Indians including people from TN in N India esp Delhi ... Some of my father's colleagues were from TN and apart from a language problem they were adapted very well into the society...

.Chandragupt:
TN is the origin of All exclusive vegetarian restaurants.
There is a chain known as Hotel Saravana Bhavan (HSB) and Aaryas. They are noth pure vegetarian.
Next to every bustand or railway station in Tamil Nadu will be a Aaryas or a Aarya Bhavan. TN introduced vegetarian food to the world (like also the Udupi of Karnataka).
Of late is the entry of local non veg food chains like Thalapakattu Biriyani and the like. When we are small , we were not able to find non veg hotels at all in the state. We all had to eat in Vegetarian hotels. Non Veg hotels then existed with thatched roof which we were not allowed to go because of our status .

Generally north Indians have big heart - they are more hospitable, friendly & accommodative .
Are you kidding me? You must be still in ChandraGupt era to say something this.
I went to Chennai last month to attend a marriage. Absolutely no problem moving around even though I don’t speak Tamil but had no trouble as everyone speaks English and accommodated me. Other than waking up at 3:00 AM for the ceremony, had a blast with all kinds of food. Though there is nothing much to see in Chennai other than some very old temples, I felt absolutely safe.
I was also in New Delhi a couple of years back with the family for a visit. Find the people way too rude, loud, uncivilized and most importantly very unhygienic. This is true not only in India but I found here in Canada as well. For them every body from the south is a Madrasi. Don’t even know where south India is though it is literally in the south of India. Forget about even talking to them as I find them very aggressive and dangerous. May be you behaved with that typical north Indian attitude in Chennai to be treated that way.
People from middle of India, get the popcorn out!
Just kidding. Its interesting that we're now moving from the extremely popular Canada vs. India debate to the equally fascinating North India vs. South India debate.
