In my case, both my wife's and my parents are in India. So it is necessary to for my family to have OCI.

It is of great benefit if one has to travel to India on a short notice or if you have investments/properties in India. It is also beneficial as you don't have to deal with the Indian bureaucracy too often.

I am sure most people get OCI because of these reasons.

In case anyone is interested, I visited CGI office in Toronto and got PIO cards for my family endorsed with lifelong validity stamp and registration not required, duly stamped and signed by Vice Consul.

This is a free optional service being done directly by the consulate (not outsourced to BLS yet).

Hello Everyone,

Somehow I missed this discussion and am panicking now. we are a family of four ready to travel to India in early feb 2016. we all have valid PIO and 3 out of 4 have renewed our CDN passports last month. I was just looking to update the new passport numbers on PIO and I read this. Thankfully the CGI website says the deadline extension to 2016 March 31st.
My chances seem low if I apply now and expect OCI within end of Jan.
What should I do?
Should I visit(calling never worked)CGI Toronto or BLS Brampton?

Thank you in advance
Shriya.

HI Shriya,
IMHO, You dont need to go to CGI if you are travelling to India soon as any indian immigration stations can stamp for life time for free of cost.
please check the CGI website for latest updates http://www.cgisf.org/page/display/30/231

I have not even added my sons passport number into PIO card...i am thinking of getting this done at the immigration office in Banglore when i visit in few months.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PIO Card:

1. What is the validity period of PIO (now considered OCI cards)?
Pios are now deemed to be OCIs and valid for lifelong. The existing PIO Cards are now valid for life of the holder. All the immigration offices have duly been informed by the Government of India that they should affix a ‘Lifelong’ stamp as and when the holder of a 15 year validity card enters/exits any Indian Airport. If the Immigration Officer does not affix the stamp you should ask for stamping “Lifelong” stamp on the PIO Card. Until new rules are in place endorsement on PIO cards continues.
2. Do these PIO (now considered OCI cads) need to be renewed whenever holders passport is renewed?
You may need to get an endorsement in the card as and when a new passport is issued. The existing PIO Cards are now valid for life of the holder. All the immigration offices have duly been informed by the Government of India that they should affix a ‘Lifelong’ stamp as and when the holder of a 15 year validity card enters/exits any Indian Airport. Try both places, if one doesn't help you properly.
In the worst case scenario apply for a visa to India for all 4.

I know someone, who applied for OCI and the process was stuck and his travel date was approaching fast, so he applied for a visa in the meantime, as he didn't want to take a chance.
