I had a quick question regarding Canadian citizens travelling to the US on a Canadian passport purely for recreational purposes. (i.e not to work)
I would like to know if anyone can share their experience as to what is asked at the border(driving) or if anything is asked at all.
Any forms, stamping etc. involved? How long do they tell you you can stay for and if and how is it tracked?
For eg. if one is a canadian citizen going to the US, what prevents him from staying there for a period of 1 year?
I will answer the last question:-
Nothing prevents anyone from staying for 1 year. However, you will not be able to work (except to becoming an illegal alien).
For the other question, all they do is stamp your passport and enter your name and PP # in their database. They will ask you ur purpose. You will have to be honest with them. They are trained to detect the fakes !
I had a chance to travel with the Canadian PP for a short trip to Palo Alto before I entered the US on a TN Visa in 2004.

Your answer to the question is wrong.
The correct answer is: The US immigration law prevents you (or does not allow) from staying in the US for 1 year as a visitor. On B1/B2 status (visitor/business), you cannot stay in the US for more than 6 months.

Hmm Cdn_dude ? Are you sure abt that ?
Do Canadian Passport holders need B1/B2 ?
Well I have a stamp on my passport but it does not indicate any B1/B2 status. I suppose a Canadian Passport holder is "IMPLICITLY" considered a B1/B2 visa holder unless he/she has another Visa.
