Before we all jump out and dance, read below:
- it does looks like it is coming!
- I've a feeling that "voting rights" may also be conferred.
- Along with the "Overseas Indian Passport" we would have to "show" our "other country" passport at the time of arrival; while departing I can understand, but why arrival?
- Which brings the question, why is it then called a "passport"?
- Fees would be US$100 for a 5-year passport, while the PIO card fees is US$310 for 15 years.

Vivek,
Thats the same link I posted ...
Where does it say it will be $100 USD ? That was a tentative rate and not fixed.
Wht is it called a passport ? Thats 'cos only if you have your "other" passport will you get "this" passport. Even Canadian passports have a 5 year time limit !
Will PIOs get voting rights or the right to contest elections in India?
No.

Overseas Indian Passport? - I don't understand why they should discriminate by not allowing one to keep their original Indian passport.

Ottawa_Nerd and maple_asian,
I quoted US$100 from my memory and no when has mentioned the price-tag of the passport yet, so you are right; though somewhere I had read earlier that that's what it is going to cost.
Also, when I wrote details about the validity of passport and PIO-card, I was trying to compare costs of aquiring either one. My idea was to set everyone's mind to compare the 2 options; i.e. if the PIO-card is continued with after the passports are being given out.
Also, it is my personal estimation that voting rights would be conferred; all I would say is just wait and see.
And, maple_asian is right in saying, it would be a "new kind of passport".
