We have a Rav4 - 2012 model V6 Limited, with Nav. Happy to report that it drives well and gives good mpg. I used to own a Saturn Vue before, compared to that Rav4 is luxury. However, when I compare with friends BMW and Lexus, I can see where Rav4 lacks. Overall, we are very pleased.
And yes, its still soaks up potholes with ease ... note to FP

Yep, Saturn was a meh. Also, with technology evolving, what used to be options are now standard.

Thanks ND. Actually, I don't know may be my ears are super sensitive, or I've been buying a different vehicle that I experience this particular contention.
.
I started with Camry and few years down the line this started happening. Matrix does this a bit (not quite too much) too, and the Corolla I bought last year is going through the same. One thing to note that, I bought them all used. Camry was 9 years old, Matrix 3 years, and Corolla 7 years. All maintained well by the previous owner. Also to add that I am also a good driver and take a pretty good care of my vehicle.
But, when I borrowed and drove used Honda (CR-V, Civic, and Accord), I found the suspension was pretty solid and moved through the potholes with much finesse.
One of my friend has been buying American Cars (an year old) and never been happier. One, they are a bit cheaper, two, he buys them and trade after 3 years to another 1 year old new model. So, he ends up paying only a few thousand more than the full price of the model. These days, American Cars come with full bells and whistles, gadgets, and what not. They are 'Makkhan' on the road, and you don't have anything to lose if buying an year old and only for 3-4 years then trade.

I would like to know this as well. Thinking about buying one with 7-8 seater and less than $20k (used). Could go for Van too, but that looks pretty un-appealing to me at this stage.
So far I have looked, all SUVs with 7-8 seaters are pretty cramped, especially when all the seats are in use. Honda Pilot is a bit expansive and doesn't fit in my budget. I have seen Ford Flex and it looks somewhat appealing. The research is still on...

Got no sedan , no Honda/Toyota in my driveway anymore, I can try to answer this question.
My opinion changed in favour of SUVs when I shifted from Honda Accord to New SUV in 2014 - Audi Q5. I loved my Honda car , was driving at times 8 hours ( Tor-NY) at stretch without a feel of tiredness. Used to take only 15 minutes gas station break in 8 hrs.
Despite that
Today I 'll be all yes for SUV, rather talked my new immigrant brother to straight way go for SUV. Cost difference is marginal. I have driven 2 SUVs extensively in recent past. Nissan Rogue and Audi Q5. Two wonderful vehicle in their own price range. I 'll recommend Rogue ( over Rav4) for a newbie into SUVs. Pure Value for money.
Also have experienced other SUVs , had option to take rental car every week and Hertz showered kindness to hand me over brand new SUVs in economy small car price. Did not like Jeep at all. Dodge SUVs were surprisingly good. Journey gives good price value but may be a trouble after 5 years. Lol I got speeding ticket on Dodge Dwango, Damn thing did not let me feel the outside speed and its giant shape was visible to cops from distance. I remember drove one Volvo suv , that gave good feel but will not buy for myself.
Also drove some Vans, I am saddened that Vans have bad reputations, despite the high utility value. Chrysler's Country&Town, Honda odyssey are good choices.
Btw BMW have worst SUVs. Shape, over priced, bad interiors, not so smooth run is my impression. There are better looking, better performing high brands SUVs in the same price. BMW have some great looking sedans though.
Few reasons why SUVs are better options than Car :
1. Price difference as compared to Cars is reducing.
2. Lower Gas cost now a days
3. Lower insurance of SUV as compared to Car
4. There is greater chance that your life will be saved if you are in SUV in an accident than being in car.

7-8 Seaters is tricky choice. It adds a cost of additional Car without adding as much seats.
Only Acura Mdx wins in this section. Even used one will serve you good. Dodge Journey is good for its price if you want to buy a new one and do away with it within 5 years. I like Fords for the shapes. No experience.

I compared Ford Flex with Pilot. Looks like they are at par, with Flex better overall. It's also a 7 seater.
