Heya ppl,
Am back again. We are finally planning to buy our first new car, so can all of u pls give me some suggestions on which car is good, based on the mileage, maintenance, and also the price. We are not looking a very high end car, considering we are just a year old in canada...how much price is okay for a new car for a new immigrant.
Also i heard some advice from fellow ppl not to buy a US manufacturer cars as they dont have resale value. Does that hold good.?
I always liked the interior smell in a New Car. So, good Luck with the new one.
Generally, car makers want to get rid of their inventory so the older models aren?t competing with new stock. (the exceptions tend to be specialty vehicles, like some hybrids, which they sell slowly).
?August and September are two excellent months to be looking for cash rebates,?For example, Hyundai is offering a very attractive cash rebates on the 2014 Accent to compete with the new 2015 (Nissan) Micra.?
So, you can buy an year end model now and regret or wait till it gets into the low territory.
So, do your own DD and see what it is that you can buy and how long you want to hang on to it.
FH.

My preference would be :
Toyota - Corolla / Camry
Honda - Civic / Accord
Nissan - Sentra / Altima
Hyundai - Elantra / Sonata
Decide which size you want to go for and then test drive in that category ....
Check under driving ..Dimple 2001 has posted recently on car buying tips ....

Fido.
Go with Honda Accord. Avoid Hyundai. I also heard some mileage issues with Nissan. Toyota, after driving it for the past 8 years or so, I am not too inclined on it as it's not as sturdy and stylish as Honda. Toyota has been producing quite a boring models over the years, and compared to Honda.
Go for Honda. Civic or Accord, doesn't matter.
May as well check Acura too.
Please take a look at this thread - http://canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=36861
In the end, only you can decide your needs/wants. Besides what Fido posted, in the small/medium category, there are some good vehicles from Mazda and Subaru.
Ford Focus/Fusion and Chevy Cruze/Malibu are good choices for small/medium sized vehicles.
As far as resale value, cars are a depreciating asset. I buy cars for "life" which means until they die. My US made Chrysler truck is chugging along after 13 years and 295,000 km, on original batteries, if I may add Recently, it has been declared "dead" aka "not worth repairing" So, while I am still driving the old vehicle for short commutes, we bought another family vehicle.
However, if you are a person who might change cars after a short few years, you can consider leasing. This will give you a flavor of what you may or may not like in a car and the ability to switch to another one after 2 or 3 years.
Every car has had its issues, some warranty related and a few recall related. Honda is grappling with Takata made air bags while Toyota had cruise control recall. GM had major issues with ignition switches while VW cheated on the emissions.

FP ~ I have driven a Civic ... comparing to a Corolla , was not impressed with a Civic for its lower positioning (read height) as well as wind noise and a smaller engine.... but this was of older models .
Camry - need not say anything .. look at the cabs on the road .. either in Toronto or Dubai
Personally I feel Hondas are more stylish and Toyotas more reliable (and boring) .
Off late I have just heard good things about Hyundai ...

Fido.
Yes, Hyundai has come a long way from being a crappy vehicle to one of the best. The Elantra and the Sonata have good styling as well.
I agree Toyotas look boring, but they run and hence they ride on that driver loyalty and reliability. We looked at the RAV4 - god awful looking dashboard, creating a lot of blindspots...ughhh.
I have an Altima. Has been good to us for the past 11 years with the exception of 2 major repairs which was disappointing for a Japanese car.
I loathe underpowered vehicles and from that perspective, Altima has done pretty good with its 2.5 L engine. They used to, and I think they still, offer a 3.5 L option.
