This just happened to my wife a few minutes ago. We live in Calgary NE. NE has sizable muslim population, infact NE is predominantly immigrant populated area with punjabis, muslims, gujratis basically all sorts of people. Never had any issues with anybody but what happened today to my wife has left me furious.

She went to collect our mail from the community mailbox and was approached by a visibly muslim lady about 40ish years old. My wife was wearing sleeveless t-shirt and slacks which leave her calves uncovered. The muslim lady told my wife that she should dress fully (aap poore kapde pehna karo) and also tell your daughters to dress fully and be a good mother to them by telling them about "akhirat" (Bachhon ko akhirat ka pata hona chahiye). My wife was shocked by this and gave her a befitting reply by telling her that she is a very good mother and she is giving our daughters good education and making them good citizens and that is what a good mother should do and that how we dress is none of her business. The muslim woman then started getting visibly angry and my wife also replied to her angrily and that was the end of the conversation.

I admire my wife for her presence of mind but just the fact that this happened here in Calgary, Canada is nothing but shocking. I always used to read about these kind of incidents but experiencing it first hand has left us furious.

I have told my wife next time she has anybody like this approaching her, call the cops.

But I am still in shock as to what kind of people we have in our neighborhood and what is the future of Canada with more and more of these kind coming here and then trying to change the way of life here. I used to brush such concerns off but may not be able to do that anymore. May be I am overreacting but I am still in utter shock and disbelief.

Just had to vent it somewhere and thats why I wrote here.

Vagg ... I do understand your angry.
As you know ... we live in a society with people of different beliefs and broughtups
Honestly we have no control over behavior of others ...
Just forget it and move on ....
If similar situation happens next time, a smile and no answer is good enough for them.

There was another unbelievable statistic.

That by 2050, the world population will increase from the now 7.4 to 9.7 billion. But the developed countries will increase from 1.25 billion to 1.28 billion. For a 25% increase, the developed world will contribute only 0.3%. Is the violence we see, a prelude? Can we depend on vote hungry politicians to protect us?

I don't know about Akhirat but about Shakira :)

I think your wife did a wonderful job. You should take her out for dinner ...

Would not hurt if you sent a note to the Authorities or media ... if the Authorities send out notes , similar occurrence to anyone else in the neighborhood can be avoided.

I will second that.

I see or do get to understand the migration patterns of these immigrants and having moved to a location much far away from their regular neighborhood, have not gotten out of their clam shells nor have they come across a Social Worker who is well versed with their life styles to tell them how the society here functions. It will take a long long time for them to get adjusted to these local customs and our mannerisms, till such a time when will see one of their own revolting against it from within.

It is when they see one of their own slip out on them and join a group there in the Desert fighting and throwing their life away, will they feel their own loss. It is all due to the strict adherence to the principles that they followed where they lived prior to their arrival here. Also they feel what that they do and ask others to do the same is the way of the future, without realizing how much that they are restricting themselves into a corner in a new country which they knew nothing about before they got in!

About the same time an year ago, I saw a film clip from the M.E. where they were kicking and beating a Nurse from our neck of the woods, who was returning back from duty in her normal attire, her work clothes, getting mauled by men like a group of vultures. It is still there to see, if you google and want to view the same. People who are used to seeing only a standard set of dresses don't want to deviate from it and they feel that others MUST always do like what they do.

In this regard they always throw in a few terms, wide ranging in nature, and it probably will cover the whole scripture that they believe in. Here we heard one such term Akhirat and the other one they throw at others is Aurat. May be they start with the alphabetical order to get us started. Though they do tell us what it is that they want us to do when we visit or sight see in the M.E., what they base these warnings upon may be a local law, we do not get to know until we get to hear through the News Media that some one got stoned or lost an arm or got hung for such and such act. I can quote here a few of the stray incidents and the Respective Governments intervening and rescuing the individual/s and subduing the calamities and saving face by avoiding such incidents.

Hundreds of years ago we could have said that happened in a far away land. With these big bellied monsters flying over us everywhere, this world has become too small for all of us. I must say this very small incident that VAGG experienced brought me much closer to him and also to his neighborhood and it has touched the soft spot in me where it hurts.

May be that they do not have the proper garb or an attire to walk out of their shorts, their Kaftan or their Kimonos or their Hijab on the very first day, but I surely could use the services of a Social Worker to take me to the nearest shelter to pick my first free pair of pants or a jacket, if I was short of funds when I first landed. If that be the case, a simple introduction to the local authorities with an explanation of the incident might clear a lot of misunderstanding that is floating around amongst us there, much far away from their place of departure.

This happened a long time ago when the French Fries Entered the restaurant chains. When I asked them what do they fry them in? The lady said they fry them in the LARD. I said just give me a Cup of coffee, and I chugged it down and left. I heard a guy in the back where they were cooking say "If they can't hack it, then tell them to get out".

Mmmm.. I am still here. Slowly getting adjusted to the COLD Weather. Please tell me when can I expect the first snow. It is sure getting HOT here. It is time to cool.

Take care.

FH.

Kudos Vagg!

I feel same every time I open the door to a bell and hear the greetings , is handed over pamphlets and invitation for next congregation. Depending upon my mood of the day and music I am playing at the time, instant reply is reciprocated. To my surprise, last month while i was on rare jog in nearby trail was approached by god sent angles, 2 of them, black suit white shirt chocolate looks , who wanted to change my life for good. They did not complain about my clothing but I felt same as Op. They are everywhere in all forms ! Canada was never immune, just that different breed is breeding fast in present times. The taxis I have taken in last 3 years were driven 70% of the time by the ardent believers , I have opened talks with most of them and have realised no less than 4 kids on average , all paid for by the government.

No, I am not mixing two different topics..
