Bio,
I am not disagreeing with you .
Is the system perfect ? NO
Is it totally useless. Absolutely Not.
Thats the only point of my post .
Overall it is fairly decent system but is heavily strained in GTA and ontario.
I also wish for everyone that no one gets to go to the hospital anywhere , but what i have seen so far it seemed pretty good for me when i compare it to US or indian system.
Atleast in Canada,a person without a job does not live in terrifying fear for not having healthcare coverage for the entire family ....in my initail days i had bought health coverage for myself and paid $300 per month just for mental satisfaction, never used a dime from it . A healthy family of 4 without job will spend about $1200 per month only for health coverage.
If God forbid anyone in the family has any adverse medical history the premiums are only higher.
in india , there are a handful of great hospitals but what is available to common masses.
When we compare to that , i dont think Canadian system is totally useless, yes it needs lot of improvement , but is not totally useless.

And i'd like to ask Torontodesi, that where are people dying in masses in Canada?

Hello,.. here is my 2 cents on this issue.
Can't say anything about the Canadan Healthcare system as I haven't reached there yet. But I have been here in the US for quite a few years and I also work for a healthcare insurance company. What stuck me odd was that people were complaining about the cost of precription drugs and there were some broad comparisions with the US healthcare system.
In the US prescription drugs cost much more than in Canada. that is the reason a lot of senior citizens cross over the border to get them. When they introduced the new Medicare bill, the pharmaceutical industry lobbied to ban that practice and any possible import of drugs from Canada or any other country.
Regarding, people dying at emergency rooms.. that sounded a bit extreme..but I will take your word for it. Over here also ER personnel are stretched thin and it is quite possible to wait there for hours. Unless your case is determined to be "life threatning", you are on your own.
Next the cost of healthcare insurance.. normally employers provide medical, dental, vision and maybe disability coverage. For an unemployed couple in their 30s with 2 children getting that kind of insurance on their own costs something around 3000 to 8000 USD p.a. depending on age, family history, coinsurance/copay and deductibles. If you don't have insurance, your medical costs go up anywhere from 40% to 500% depending on the procedure.
As I said, just my 2 cents... Best of health to all members and their loved ones.
Regards,
Souvik

MI, thats the point if people are not dying in masses in US or in Canada then why we are paying so much taxes while US people are not.

As I mentioned in my last post, even the prescription drugs(which we know are cheaper in Canada than in US...the US pharmaceutical industry is crying out hoarse about the issue) is heavily subsidised in provinces like Quebec(for those unemployed or under welfare or not covered under private plans). If I am not mistaken, almost all provinces cover these drug costs for seniors and those needing longterm care OR lower income groups.
e.g: http://pharmacare.moh.hnet.bc.ca
*The new approach focuses PharmaCare financial assistance for British Columbians who need it most: the lower your income, the more assistance the government provides for your prescription drugs.*
And things are probably moving in the right direction:
http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/displaypackstory?2002/11/29+207.raw+RomanowReport+2
*Last year, Canadians spent $12.3 billion on prescriptions. More than half - 55 per cent - of the cost was paid for by private insurers and individuals. The rest was picked up through various federal and provincial government plans. *
I really dont think this is a bad deal at all.
Can things be better?SURE!! I'm all for it. However, isnt it a bit illogical to consider it *useless*?
p.s: this comes from someone who spent 8 hrs, over 2 days, in the ER about three weeks ago.
