, almost all provinces cover these drug costs for seniors and those needing longterm care OR lower income groups.

Do or Die.....
Jake, the Trillium drug plan is for people with HIV I believe.
In Ontario there's zip if you are unemployed and need prescription meds for other things. It's VERY difficult to afford medicine on your own. On top of that, there's the stupid dispensing fee to fork over.. what is with that? And yes, prescription drugs without insurance are extremely expensive in BOTH the US and Canada. If you don't have some sort of insurance, yes you are treated worse than a donkey, but atleast the US has recognized that and is doing something to address it - Canada won't even admit that a problem exists.
In the past five years, every state in the US has implemented medicare plans that pay for the total cost of healthcare for the unemployed - and therhe are prsecription plans that go with. If it's not free, it's heavily subsidized. Even the unemployed, less wealthy though employed, small business owners, single parents etc.. can buy health insurance plans directly from the state at minimal cost depending on family size and income. most of the plans you pay an average of $6 per month for a family of four - how's that for subsidized insurance premiums?
In Canada, the medical profession is so comfortably wrapped in warm cozy blankets by OHIP that you can not even sue doctors for malpractice. Nobody will pay attention to you. In the US atleast docs are scared of malpractice suits and so the quality of care is more attentive. Here, it's everything goes. I agree with biomed, it's not uncommon to see or hear of people dying in the ER or suffering under a physician's care here. Fewer doctors, heavier workloads, and a more give-a-damn attitude exists here. Just because something's "free" doesn't necessarily mean it's alright.

Contrary to what our elections suggest just Ontario is NOT Canada
Quebec has a prescription drug plan, BC has one...I think Alberta too. Albertans can confirm. Ontario may well be the only oddity, inspite of being the richest province?. So dont 'blame Canada', 'blame Ontario'
btw: the abuse in malpractice lawsuits is one of the reasons for higher insurance premiums(for doctors). This is transferred to the clients. I really dont think we should be comparing the Canadian system with the US system. Both have their own inherent problems. Just like in life...NOTHING is perfect all the time. We all are entitled to our preferences.
