I do not know how u define a \" happening place \".As far as my knowledge goes, UK is definately a more happening place than Canada. It is difficult to find a news about Canada in any international channels but u can find UK headlines in any international channel frequently. Moreover, there is a history associated with each and every state of London or even every city of UK for that matter.
UK has a very rich culture. Most of the english authors, scientists and many more great people have been associated with London.
Most of the US presidents studied in UK universities. Not only that, the leaders around the world have studied in UK.
As per my feeling,English culture starts from UK and ends in UK.
As far as weather is concerned, the poets around the world have quoted UK's weather in many of their poetries. Many poets have in fact been inspired by the weather and have written many poems in its context.
Even in summer,it is not so hot as compared to Toronto.
Besides, the economy of course is very sound.

Seems like other things r just fine as indicated by Desi Girl . Only MAJOR abstaining factor might be discrimination / racism . If u r planning 2 settle @ a place and eventually r led 2 believe that u dont belong there / made 2 feel as 2nd citizens it can b discomforting .
Canada is different with 50 % ppl Immigrants and growing --- u kinda associate urself with them . But jobs and ecoomy are big qs !!

Desigirl,
Maybe your experiences are different....and maybe you are right from your perspective .
Here is why i call Toronto a more happenning place.
1. There are a lot more smaller communities here of which one can easily become a part of and actively participate ....both socially and professionally....and most importantly i felt very welcomed in all groups , even in places where i was ther only "desi".
2. most malls , shopping places close at 5-6pm in London , ( maybe things have changed now) ....in toronto shopping places remain open till 9-10 pm easily ....even in desi areas like gerrarrd street one can stay beyond 1.00am and restaurants etc remain open.
3. I agree, London has a lot more historical significance, it politically more charged and but ... how does that affect daily day to day life for us ....here in toronto almost every weekend there is some street festival going on and range of activities one can get involved in is very wide and very afforable for most people . In a short time of 8 months here i feel myself very involved with this city on both social and professional level....and everyweekend is a challenge to chose where to go and where to miss.
4. U r right , a lot of poets were inspired by UK's weather but we are not poets .... it is hard to enjoy winters when is it always damp and grey ...compared to Toronto's winter which remains mostly clear and sunny .... unless one gets blasted by a snow storm from time to time .
...and Toronto's summer , well toronto's summer is glorious ...if it gets slightly hotter than London , so be it ...we are from india !! one doesnt feel it is real summer till the murcury goes past 35C....unfortunately this summer Toronto probably never had a 35+ days , atleast not yet.
5 . There are a lot more places to go in toronto and it is a lot more beautiful with lakes in north ontario, it is fabulous ..... one can enjoy a drive for 4 hours and still not cover one tenth of the province .... if i drive for 4 hours outside London, i wont be in england ...well you know what i mean .
but please dont get me wrong ...your experiences may be different and maybe i havent seen the good side of London yet ....just my take .
