Not a day goes by without a sob story about the "riches to Rags" story getting online on a Desi website or newspaper in Canada. Binoy Thomas (the Weekly voice) thins he is doing a great service by highlighting the so called "plight" of those who immigrated to Canada, when in fact, he isn't.
This is my fifth year in Canada. I have an MBA, have over 20 years of sales and marketing experience with the top three newspapers in India. When I first came to Canada, life was no bed of roses - I couldn't find a job in my profession - simply because the jobs didn't exist. Besides, there was an element of racism, wherever I went......... After alll that was nothing new to be expected. The white is supreme (by his own standards), is scared of the afro american.......... and where do we stand? Well we are neither black or white, but the ubuquitious "brown Desi". Yes no one wants your MBA or Ph.D from back home. Maybe they feel insecure, or simply won't care, because they want no "outsider"
The list of experiences I went through, is endless. The major difference between me and those who have nothing but complaints about the system here, is that I learnt to navigate through the system, kept fighting, , while they chose togive up easily...
I have come across hundreds, if not millions of Indians who have made their mark as financial experts, real estate agents, Independent salesmen...... et al. The one thing that I found common among these succesful people was :
1.They were not ready to give up
2) They were not easily discouraged.
3)They had no excess baggage in their minds about "what they were back home" and "what they are" now. They focussed on "what they wanted to become"
So to all those who want to pack and go back........ well if you want to give up before the war begins, and you want to run away from the action........ well good luck in the so called "security" of your village, town and city in India.
One word of advice to those who wish to highlight the"plight" of "skilled, experienced and talented people" from way back in India............... Do your countrymen a service............... encourage those by highlighting the success that ordinary Indians have achieved in this country.

What can be imagined, can be achieved.
Racism? I think that's a scapegoat for many people. In Canada, there's way too many educated professionals. A University degree alone won't cut it in Canada, neither will foreign experience in many cases. You need some training and post-graduate education in Canada, to really be worth it. Ie; Masters, or certifications and some experience.
Many people make the assumption that they'll be welcomed with open arms. The world does not work that way, many Canadians here have the same difficulties you have, including white people too. So I wouldn't be quick to point fingers at White people. Canada is probably one country you'll experience the least amount of Racism than anywhere else in the world. If you had came here in the 60's like my father, you would know what racism is really about.
But I do agree with your point on working hard, maintaining focus and determination. That is definitely true. But remember, you've only been here 5 years and have assessed the "condition of Canada", I've been in Canada for almost 24 years, I was born, raised and educated here and like you, I am also Indian, yet I dont encounter any of those problems you exclaim to occur. I know the problems are existent, but these are problems that go away eventually and are simply the function of being new to a strange country and experiencing culture shock.
When I did experience racism, that was back in the 80's, things have changed considerably and you should be glad you came now.
Yes, most white people do have it easier and that has alot to do with the fact that they're just been here longer, they also have been educated here, have experience here, and they are more well settled than you. So it is only expected that they will have a better start/chance than you.
However, not all white people are doing well. In fact, if you check the statistics on which community is the most umployed/poverish in Canada (particularly Toronto), to your surprise, you'll find that white people are notorious for seeking government assistance and welfare.
Many indian people have too much pride to seek assistance, and thus they work hard even if they're phD's they will seek even labour work just to avoid feeling the need of being "assisted" which I think is a good trait of our community.
I Never encontered racism in fact the whites are more helpful then most Indians.
I stay in a 50,000 population wala city with more then 45,000 whites and only 500 desi's
