Bangladesh,
India)

According to the HDR, 80% of India's population earns less than $2 per day!

Would be interesting to see how the 74% above was calculated (to which you have not provided a link), but I reckon a very significant part of that 74% would be from the 80% that earns less than $2 per day.

Immigrants would not come from the 80% that earns less than $2 per day.:D

Hello DTC :)

Things have been quiet for a while so thought this would be a good place to remind you of a quote made by you on 19 October 2004

SNIP===========================================

Does SF do any work other than post on CD??
Wow! I think he has set the record for the longest posts, and I don't think it is going to get broken anytime soon!

I see you have bee really busy, in less than a month you have managed to break it many times over and on so many threads! Bravo. Hope you are finding some time to work though :D

Theres this one by you on this thread, which you guys are debating above, which i too wish was true

SNIP===========================================

"it is also true that most desis in general DO NOT drink! It is an irrefutable fact, and I am sure you too know it very well,......

SNIP==========================================

Even though i did read the stats which you brought out, i really wish it had been true, then maybe we wouldnt have so many problems with staff discipline in the office connected to intoxication

I DONT drink but my brother , all my close friends, colleagues at office and a large number of relatives do drink.....well actually even our maid servant's husband does too:p

While i havent read any article that a Liquor/ wine shop has ever had to be closed due to the desis not drinking, i have seen reports of them being looted though !

Anyway i do agree that as the drinking figures may not tally with the ground facts, and it may be a similar case with the HDI figures too which you are trying to get across

All that apart and over with, i am still as curious as i was at the beginning of this thread when you refuted the HDI acceptability, that if the HDI is not alright, what exactly is, what should immigrants be really concerned with? What is it that you exactly wanted to bring out at the start of this thread.

No pun intended, i would really appreciate a honest view.

A little more attention from your end is called for. The 74% figure is percentage of males who "abstain"!;) Not those who drink!!
Also a little more patience would have given you the answer to your second question about the link.
As to how it was calculated, the UN and their team know better and I trust their stats.

A little more comprehension from your end is called for!:D

I pointed out the possibility of a relationship between the 74% who 'abstain' and the 80% who earn less than $2 per day.

I had no difficulty following that Cren. Wonder why some cannot seem to make the simple connection. Also those stats are more redundant when we consider that these #'s do not represent the desis in canada( who obviously earn more than $2 a day).
Now really...nuff said :)... over to da man!

:)

I don't think problems faced by you at work have been taken into consideration in compiling the stats. However, if you feel that the same should be taken into account and can alter the data, I would urge you to send your ecommendation to the UN so that the next time around they also ask people how many "intoxication" related issues they have as a percentage of...ummm...of what? May be you know better.

So?:confused:
My statement:
Less than 50% of desis consume alcoholic beverages.
So your brother, friends, relatives, maid servant's husband belong to the smaller group who drink. That's all!
Could you please elaborate what exactly are you trying to say?

I did not refute the data or acceptability of HDI? If you believe I did, please quote!!

Now that's a proper question. I am sorry if I have not been able to communicate my deposition to you. Maybe if you read the thread again, but this time perhaps with a little less belligerence and antagonism, I am sure you will be able to understand it better.
Quoting from one of my earlier posts:
To summarize my argument, immigrating with the purpose of enjoying improved infrastructure and facilities in the developed countries is not the same as choosing Canada because it is ranked 4 by UNDP. As I have said in one of the first few posts, most of the indicators used in the HDI report have actually very little relevence to issues faced by immigrants.
The US ranks lower than Canada in the UNDP report. Does that make it a country less worthy of immigration?
Take a poll of people in India of those who wish to immigrate, that given a choice between Canada and the US, which country they would prefer?
I bet you know the answer! Again not all, but an overwhelming majority would vote as you guessed. Why wouldn't they consider a higher HDI country? You tell me and you have your answer!
Secondly, the advantage gained in terms of enjoying the benefits of the better infrastructure, sometimes get more than offset by the other problems faced by some immigrants.

As an immigrant there are many more factors that come into play in making immigration a success than those the HDI takes into account.
Thanks for an honest question and I have indeed given my honest view.

What "spin" ?

Your whole point to point explanation to VJ on why you wrote what you wrote to Atulgs. Like many other instances, you choose to remain blind to the fact that your post there was offensive to the person in question. Dancing around this fact wearing rhetoric does not change anything! Even I found your reply offensive, if you had nothign better to contribute then you should not have.

But like always, this stuff does not hit you until you're on the receiving end.

Please note that in my post I have very clearly said that I am NOT trying to find fault or anything. I have also said that I am only "curious"!Why should then it call for a "fit"? And honestly, I am curious why any sane person with access to the internet will ask for information on "trend in regard to CAD against USD" on CD??? Honestly, it beats me? If you think he was doing the right thing and that's what you recommend people do, well all I can say is if that's what you think then that's what you think! ::shrug::

Who's talking about recommending anything? If you're surprised at someone's question, does that mean the question is wrong? Are you that smart?

And if you wanted the person to do a search, you could've just posted that. What's the point of posting questions like "Does your ISP forbid this or that?"

Quote:
Orginally posted by DiogenestheCynic
I don't. But what's that got to do with whether he should try and look for "trend in regard to CAD against USD" on CD and not somewhere suggested by searching the internet??:confused:

Why should he look elsewhere? Seriously, who're you to decide what he should do? Are you saying he needs your permission to post a question here?

Quote:
Orginally posted by DiogenestheCynic
How would already knowing the answer to this lead question make any difference to his subsequent question, if there was one, on CD??:confused:

]

How do you know it would not? Again, why are you making assumptions on his behalf? Why not give him the benefit of doubt?

Quote:
Orginally posted by DiogenestheCynic
No. Some queries are difficult to construct for an efficient search. Quite often one has to sift thro several pages looking for information. I am only saying that for something as simple as a currency conversion, it would be much more efficient and time saving to do a search himself than post it on a message board.

He's asking about a trend. And regardless, if HE has the time, why should you bother? Is that so difficult to understand? Its his question, let him ask it.

And even if you did want to take objection, could you not find better words? Did you have to taunt him with stuff like "Does your ISP forbid this or that?"

BOTTOMLINE :

The guy was offended, if you see his response to you later on in his post. You may still sit upon your high horse and claim this and that, but this remains a simple fact. You've responded in a similar fashion to some other questions as well. And that's what I pointed out and asked you to stop.
