Yesterday during cofee break my colleagues were discussing about a Gora engineer in our company before i joined who changed carrers and became a building carpenter.
He resigned then trained to be a carpenter and is now gone to the East coast and is building houses.
Strange country !!!!

"Ever dance with the devil in the pale moon light?"
"I always ask that of all my prey."
"I just like the sound of it."
My Previous boss, having solid international background in irrigation and drainage and also having P.Eng, chose to build houses like the guy you are talking about.
His logic was simple. He, along with three others can build 4-5 houses in a year. And that was giving him much more return than he was getting as an engineer. Second, as a professional engineer, you have to assume lot of responsibility, that was not that big while building just a few houses in a year.
However after doing this for some years, he again return to regular workforce (as an engineer). The reason he gave me was his aging body. You can't work for more years in labour industry in this country!
During the time he was building houses, he saved enough money. So there are few goras who can think about such strategies.

It is true. In North america people change carriers at least One time and in many cases a few times. Sometimes it is just out of desire to change and not because of economic conditions or getting laid off.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
I think we come with a baggage of post colonial mindset of a class based society where only certain jobs ...all of which white collar , are only dignified and respected. I carry some of that baggage as well and am only too happy to shed it.
the dignity of all labor is very impressive here , no matter what work it is.
My old boss very proudly used to tell that his first job was at the age of 16 was on a garbage removal truck, later as a newspaper delivery boy ,today he is a VP and is well known in the industry circles, yet he has no qualms about his son who has started his career as a plumber.
Another little factoid - Dick Cheney was in the electician union for 6 years before he moved on with his career.
