Hi,
Just came back from India. Thought i could share my experience with u guys...
Before, Every time i visited India, I used to get Liquor Permit from the Govt. of India toursism office, right at the International airport. (Its reqd. for Gujarat)
It seems Govt. Of India Tourism office has stopped issuing such permits.
I asked them where i could get it ? They said you have to go to your citys Excise Dept (Liquor prohibition control) and they would give it to you. It seems the laws were changed 2/3 months ago.
Great!!! And How do I get to my city in Gujarat with the 2 Chivas Regal Scotch bottles that i bought at the Duty free? No answer... Just a wicked smile...
What i did with those bottles in Bombay is a different story..., but I finally got to the Excise office in my native city to get the permit and spoke to the Deputy Excise officer. Reply "Saheb round par gaye hien. Come back on friday. It will cost you 1000/- rupees to get 1 permit which is good for 4 units". So i went on friday "Saheb kal aaye the... Ab next thursday aayenge".
So, just to play i asked him "Sir, Is there any other way i could get it faster?" . Reply : "why dont you go to so and so liquor shop. I will call him and tell him that u r my friend, and he will give you on the spot permit for 2 units..."
I will leave the rest for you guys to guess

Try overtaking child's imagination
Yo my good friend.... Thanks for the F/B
I have a canadian passport, and they no longer issue these permits to foreigners !!! Fine way to promote Foreign tourism, eh!!!
I was told by the Indian tourism office and thereafter by the Gujarat tourism office to go the Excise office. So guess the laws have really changed. As per the info i got, the Excise officer can now legally sell permit good for 4 units for 1000/- Rs each ( on medical grounds ofcourse, as the officer put it ).
On the other hand, u r probably right!!! A Permit is also issued at the store itself. Its good for 2 units, but I would have had to go to Surat for that and i didnt like all that crap about this deputy excise officer calling the store and telling him that i am his friend.
Guess, thats how it always works for him!!! Heard from somewhere that this deputy excise officer has 3 huge bungalows... Guess where all that money comes from!!!
Yeah, I did get the drink!!! I went to Daman and the officer there told me that he cannot issue permits for Gujarat, but he can for Rajasthan... He gave me a permit for 2 units and told me to say that i was on my way to Diu!!! On the other hand, i could get what i wanted easily in my native city without any permits So, yeah!!! I did manage to raise a toast with my old friends
Cheers !!!

Hi friends,
Although, I read all the posts, but am not clear. I have a PR and wish to have a liquor permit, when I visit Gujarat. Will I be able to get the same or not? Do they give permit only to foreign passport holders or INDIAN passport holders with PR card are fine?
Please reply.
Regards,
VJ.
Why would they ban liquor in an entire state to begin with? Sounds too stupid to me.
