Very frequently I used to have conference calls with people in USA (at that time I was still in India). There are 2 streams of voice packets. one from USA to India and second is India to USA. Now the connection which has better speed will be given preference over slower side. As a result system starts destroying voice packets as they are not able to deliver it to the destination because of slow speed. If you try to speak like u speak on walkie talkie chances are it may work. Once you try to intrupt the slower side speech. That side generated voice packets are lost. That is the reason when you spoke from India and if they interepted your voice stream, they could not listen to rest of the matter.

For good quality you need alteast over 90 KB speed 40 KB is considered low quality. Eco increases and voice will breakup.
Other correction that calls to India to one noonly is local (not free) as you pay here for unlimited local call.
