I started reading this thread but could not continue as I do not want to go back to my middle east days.

As an Indian we need to turn defeat into victory, and so it is very important to stay in the middleeast, make money, enhance our mindset and get out. Middleast is a second class slavery, it depends though where you are ?, it's not that only the arabs exploit, even those from asian countries, tend to exploit their counter part nicely.

As per Chandresh claim of living like king. There are no Kings over there, they are happy to compromise their self respect, values and then show off .

May be the guys I have known closely are the ones who are in aposition to exploit others and therefore I find they live like kings (infact some of them who have shifted to Canada regret their decision - in their value systems, the compromises they have to make in canada, or are still not able to make are far more demanding than in ME).

And the guys whom you have known are the ones who have been exploited........so that is your experience and since I have entirely different experience, my perception is different.

Chandresh

This is a really important point. In essence, you cannot apply a mathematical proof to ethics and therefore there's no real way of proving beyond a reasonable doubt whether doing anything is morally right or wrong. Mathematically, you can't even prove if murder is evil.

So in that sense, I would agree that we should accept the customs and norms of another culture as their way of life.

But then ethics are a product of belief, conscience and social conditioning. As we grow up and hopefully mature, we learn quite a few things. Some are taught and some we just ....know. And thus we develop judgement.

And it is this judgement that tells me that if a country does not allow women in politics, it is wrong! It is impossible for me to accept this as just a "way of another culture". Similarly, I don't appreciate being singled out because of my religion. And if religion is the basis of such discrimination, then it should work the other way too, i.e. during Diwali or Christmas, all the citizens of Saudi Arabia should abide and respect the respective customs of people who follow those religions. Does it work that way? Nope. And that's just plain unfair.

I just can't accept unfairness as the "way of another culture".

Also, I don't believe the debate is between eastern culture and western culture. To me, its more of a matter of right vs. wrong. Democracy in India, despite all its flaws and hypocrisy, is still years ahead of a country like Saudi Arabia. Govt. is still subject to scrutiny and social expression is not stifled in the womb.

The prevalance of law and order in Saudi Arabia isn't exactly a very big plus if you consider the negatives. Its like a discplinanian dad who always walks around with a whip in his hand boasting how well behaved his 7 year old kid is.

I know what you are saying. I for one cant stand any kind of discrimination.

But as you said it is impossible to find out mathematically if something is right or wrong, then it is left to the people.

Is total voting enfranchisement for all citizens a correct course of action?

All "rights" are an agreegment among people, to some extent. If enfranchisment is determined to be culturally beneficial (as we've determined here), then, sure. But If the women are demanding to be left out of the political process and the men offer to take that burden upon themselves, then a different organization may be more beneficial.

I know we consider some rights (Natural rights) to be absolute. right to Life, right to Death (which we dont have right now).

Regarding the religion thing, i think the Majority rules there, so if you are in a minority as in Saudi (an Ultra conservative example of islam) then they are not going to change for you (Remember you have said this in regards to our many discussions if Canadians should change for us). Sad But true. i wish it were not.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

Mr. Val,

I agree that ME is a biased society, for example if you are working in an MNC or Oil co. you are paid 3 times the salary of equally qualified person working in a small time supplier / contractor / maintenance company.

Basically it all depends how fortunate you are....

In Dubai you can earn $ 2000 to $ 5000 to $10,000 pm for same position but different companies.

This sort of divide is not there in Canada.....

Hence for those who work for smaller firms and paid low......ME seems to be a hell........and for those who are fortunate and work for BIG firm.. this place like heaven.......dine n dance in 7* hotels, drive Mercs, enjoy Europe Tour whenever you want..........visit India anytime u wish....costs less than TO/Montreal trip........In effect Purchase power is more....

Nobody can deny that MONEY RULES THE WORLD...........

90% of things in this world can be achieved with money......better be happy with 90% rather than crying for the 10% which you cant get.

Dont blame a place..........there is good and bad in each and every part of the world....no place is perfect HEAVEN.........let it be India/Europe/ME.

It all depends what you want in life.......or may what's in your FATE.....
