Hi,
We are moving from USA to Canada.
1] If the jewellery is personal, do we still have to do evaluation?
2] If still needed, How do we get the evaluation done in U.S.A for the jewellery?
3] DO we still need to include in the customs list as well? and if yes, how would that be mentioned?
When I moved from the USA, I gave a list of jewelry and silver articles as goods to follow. The Immigration officer wrote "valuation required" only for 2 items. When I visited India, I got it valued at the place, where I bought them. When I returned from India, I told the Immigration officer that I had some goods to follow. My troubles started then. I was asked to go to the customs. Being 22 carat, my jewelry were shining,. The customs officer refused to believe, that they were old. She told me that I would have bought them on the day of valuation. She also refused to believe me when I told her that some of the jewelry were taken by me from Canada to India for a marriage. She wanted to call India and speak with the jeweler(at 2 am India time). She emptied my handbag and checked each and everything. She even asked me the reason why I had a xerox copy of my Driver's license.
She also told that the Mangal sutra I was wearing was also new. I explained to her that I was wearing the same mangalsutra for so many years. I was keeping my cool and said, that I was not telling a lie. Finally, there was nothing they could do...They said, Welcome Home and let me go..........I wish I had worn a collared shirt wearing all the jewelry and just walked out without declaring that I had the goods to follow... Being very honest got me into trouble I think.........
I am happy I did the right thing.
Anyway.........experiences differ....
But, whatever you are bringing at the time of landing, they do not even bother to check. You can bring whatever you want....
Don't even think about polishing your jewelry, if you are bringing it as goods to follow...
Any jeweler in India will give valuation certificate. But, you may have to pay Rs100 or 200 for the service.

HOPE
Hi friends,
We did our landing in Oct 2002 from UAE. At that time we had a goods to follow list stating the jewellery and its approx., value. But we did not have any valuation certificate nor any photographs. Like our friend mentioned we too faced the same problem as all my gold was in the locker in India. But luckily I had receipts of the gold purchased in Dubai.
I tried to explain to them showing the receipts along with the description.
Suprisingly they let us go.
We are moving permanently to Canada 2 weeks from now. I will be taking part of my gold along with me but I am not sure what suprises await at the customs.
If the gold you are taking is within the limits you had already declared as "goods to follow", then there would be no problems.
It will be smooth sailing.
Best of Luck.
The practice for import of jewellery into Canada as a first time landing immigrant is very simple:
1. Make a list of all that you wish to import either with you or in goods to follow list.
2. As far as possible, take photographs of the articles. For smaller articles, you may take one photograph for a few of them (like rings or simple chains) - just making sure that each article is clearly visible. A good idea would be to put it on plain dark coloured cloth on say your dinning table and take the photograph.
3. For each article, give an approximate valuation of what would be the cost at the time of import. CUSTOMS DO NOT REQUIRE VALUATION FROM JEWELLERS or authorised persons - your personal valuation should be ok as far as it is not too far from market price. Put that value on the list and submit it with photgraphs (preferably in a small album to make it look organised) to the officer.
I did all this, and had no problem atall.

Hi,
If we bring the goods (which was in the goods to follow list) after one year of landing, what happens? Do I have to pay customs duty for that?
Thanks.
