When a PR who lives out of Canada returns to Canada, having a SIN helps at least in quickly opening a bank account and to start working (if offered a job).

A SIN number is not needed for opening a bank account.
It is only needed at the end of the year when the banks have to report interest income to the Revenue agency.
You can open a chequing account (no interest) without a SIN.

You can also open a savings account without SIN, but will have to provide it by the end of the year.
But why would you want to open a savings account (earning peanuts as interest) when you plan to go back for some time - a chequing account should suffice.

As for working, if you are offered a job, you can use that offer letter to expedite the SIN processing.
In such cases, SIN is usually issued within 10 days.

Hope this helps.

Health Card too

Have to be here for 90 days to apply.

ooops... Are there different rules for different provinces? As I guess, I applied for Health Card within 10 days of my arrival!

Regards.

Thinking One,
You are right, there is no restriction of number of days for applying for health card. You can apply for it before 90 days, but you will be eligible to use the OHIP only after 90 days of landing. The dates of validity on the card will ensure that.

Thanks a bunch guys, and gals if any. Do I have to have a letter with my name and address on it for applying for the SIN card. A friend of mine was telling me to mail a letter on my name to the address where I will be going.

Also, do I need to rent a car, how is mobility in Toronto. Can do without the car for the tasks that you guys mentioned a newly landed immigrant should do.

Appreciate Your response

I can reply 2 ur 1st point in the negative. They just require u 2 fill in the SIN form and deposit @ the counter w/o any proofs . This may be an address of a friend.

U can opt for a 1.SIN card 2. Bank account(only if u wish 2 mantain ties and file taxes --if not then skip this) 3. Health Card : No advantages if u arent planning 2 stay for 3 months now .... Do it later .

Manasvi.

If you live and work within the city of Toronto, then you don't need a car - the TTC system is very good.
In fact, a car is more of a pain because of parking problems and high insurance rates within the city of Toronto.

For the rest of the GTA, if you live in places like Brampton and Mississauga, and work in Toronto, you will most likely need a car.

Although it is possible to use a combination of Mississauaga/Brampton transit and TTC to get to work, it takes a very long time and there will be times when you will simply want to drive, the traffic not withstanding.
You will also need a car for grocery shopping, etc. unless you live very close to a shopping plaza.

If you work in certain parts of downtown, you can use the GO train to commute, but you will still need a car for your other activities.

Hope this helps.
