Yes you are 50% right. They wont invoke religious discussions while on work but In USA the religion is a vote catcher for long and people hold it dear to their hearts.
Bush has won this election for his right wing views ,for upholding christian values etc.But there is nothing wrong in being religious and not being fanatic about it.This is how the world was in 1950s.1970s,1980s.

Children are still baptised in USA and US is a very conservative country
politically when it comes to religion.A common blue collar worker still cares abt religion in USA and goes to church .US is not chicago/or downtown los Angeles.Bill Clinton when he commited adultery was
considered an evil man though statistically 50% of marriages in US
ends in divorce and adultery is not isolated if not widespread. Here again you can see how a common man preceives religion.

Also,Religious christian festivals are/were/will be forever a good occasion to celeberate if you are a christian and will bridge the gap between brown Indians and white christians just as blacks in America in olden times had bridged the Gap to an extent on the basis of religion and by having separate black churches.
Infact quite a few second generation Indian christians in US attach "junior " to their names ,so that with their last name like Putthackal or cherian or chacko does not make them different from other white chrisitians atleast on the resume if not in the mirror
This is how the slaves did to hide their inadequacy. It took only a man like Mohammad Ali /Malcom X to make them understand their worth. This goes for Hindus too who change their name to Paul or Sue etc

Don’t mean to get into a huge debate about religion ow!

Fact is in most of North America, no one gives a damn about your religion! I’m a practising Catholic and its not like I invoke my religion in my day to day interactions with people so I absolutely don’t understand how being ‘Christian’ provides immigrants with ‘religious affinity’.

This ‘cultural superiority complex’ ends up parents not being able to adjust (because they perceive all of the west as ‘decadent’) and they try to pass that on to their kids who don’t necessarily agree (basically ties in to what Chandresh pointed out in his post).

I belive that it's our responsibility to provide good culture and values to our childerns. There are so many community organizations in toronto also. Like once I was at Swaminarayan Mandir (finch & Hwy 427). And I really impressed. They have a different group of ages. They tells stories of Lokrd Krishna, bhakt Prahalad to kids. they have so many other activites including Gujarati classes also. I think we should have to take them once a week, so they could understand what is the Hindusim. Which I belive it's very important.
