In 1985 and 1999 when oil prices crashed the people just dropped thier house keys at the bankers and left the province as they could not make ends meet or pay their debts.

Bitter cold in Alberta - well yes, but once it drops below -10 how does it matter? It's too cold anyway....and we have health tax in Ontario too....my only reason for hesitating to move to Alberta is that everything seems to revolve around oil, and what happens one day when the oil industry goes into a downturn? Is there something else to prop up the fortunes of the province?

Oil prices will not increase tremendously but boom in Alberta is here to stay. China following high enery footprint model like USA will only cause higher demand, Renewable energy only becomes economical and viable if cheap energy supply becomes unreliable (like in violence prone gulf region) or unavailable (due to lack of refinaries , hurricane etc.) In lack of that.. Alberta boom will continue.. I would much rather worry about effect of that on regional imbalance and stability of Canadian union. One province with such independent minded populance having so much economic leverage is not a receipe for stability .. but that's neither here nor there.. Meanwhile it's party time in AB!
