As far as i have seen, it gets pretty nasty in toronto during winters like -9 degs or -10 degs on some days, but most of the winters will be minuses....add little wind to that and little moisture from lake ontario, so it actually feels way colder than it actually is....

I have some of my friends from TO telling me that more than the cold it is the chill factor, which is a result from the wind flow direction over the lake. And that chill factor reaches upto your bones even if you are fully clothed with Rupa, clothes and jackets.
Weather is only an "also ran". More like a dog. Do not pay it too much attention and it will not bother you.
But are you not planning your move as per children's academic session?
As for chilly winds you can always bring your igloo along. That is a sure shot remedy.
Hi LD,
Well I am getting bolder with listening to everyone’s talk on cold weather. If we can survive gulf heat with the AC on. We can survive the Canadian cold weather with the heater on.
Whereas the children’s academic session is concerned, I believe it starts in September. We cannot move immediately and have to do the landing before April. Hence, it’s not a choice we have to move in before April. But no probs, life to aisi he hai, bus chalte raihna hai.
In some areas of Japan there is a tradition that they take their one year old babies and bathe them in ice-cold water in a lake.
I wonder who benefits?
Is it the babies who lose their fear of ice cold water, or is it the parents?
Adults do that in canada too.....called polar bear dip....i have done that once....was fun....you need high percentage of vodka in your blood stream though....

Hi IceCream,
Welcome to canada. How cold it is, is really how cold you make it out to be. Normally the mercury goes down to -15 in December but the windchill can make it feel much lower. As low as -25.
Since you are coming here in december you will need warm clothing. But can i also make a suggestion on the 26th December which is Boxing day, you get warm winter clothes at good discounts. Try to get yourself warm jackets and shoes.
The key to keeping warm is to dress up in layers - if you do this you can manage with out thermal inner wear. Wear a full sleve banyan, then a shirt, then a fleece and then a winter jacket. Similarly wear long underpants and then jeans on top to keep warm.
One last thing if mentally you feel it is going to be cold so that you will not manage then you will not manage. if however you have the right attitude you will manage.
All the best, keep and open mind and things will work out for you.
Regards
