"I took my chair here and I threw it over my shoulder and I went, 'Bam,"' the 20-year-old said nonchalantly, his eyes glued to the screen of his new iBook, as he tapped away on the keyboard at a testing station.

You should see the crowds in front of the stores on the "day after Thanksgiving" sale on the 3rd Friday in November in US.

The stores open at 6 or 7 AM, and crowds flock in line in the freezing cold, atleast an hour or two before the stores open. All for some bargains that would probably save a few bucks, or for some freebies worth $10 or so.

The first time we went on an after thanksgiving sale, we went at 7 AM, and by then all the "early bird" sale items were sold out! We got wiser the next year and went at 6 AM and snatched a few deals. We got even wiser the following year and slept through!

Does it happen in Canada too? I know Thanksgiving comes in October here..

Yes, to a great extent it does - but not necessarily around the Canadian Thanksgiving.
More during Christmas - just before and after.
You ought to see the queues in stores like FutureShop and BestBuy around this time !

There are "big" sales virtually every day of the year, if you go by the newspaper adverts :)
However, I don't think the Labour Day sales are really that great of a deal - you might come across a true bargain in some store every now and then.
But my guess is that the greatest deals are up for grabs around the Christmas and NY weeks, especially NY when the stores want to clear their inventory and re-stock new items for the next year.

In electronics items, the period around Christmas/NY is great because they want to get rid of the "older" models and stock-up the "new" models.

;)

Just go on the weekends. You wont come back empty handed.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
