Hi all,
Just wanted to check in if someone is or knows someone who is Ph.D Life sciences (Clinical Physiology & Pathology), working as a researcher in India (Cancer research) – as to how are career opportunities here in Canada.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks
I\\\\'m a PhD in Physical Sciences. My assessment of the research field in Canada is that no much basic research is happening in Canada. This is for the bad news.
But the good news is that you have abundant opportunities in USA. The best place to start is at NIH, Washington D.C.
If you are planning to immigrate to Canada, I would suggest you to do a complete internet search of Universities in Canada, who perform research in your area and write to them before you land.
I was recently speaking to a Director of Research & Development in a Pharmaceutical company in mississauga and he was also mentioning that if you are looking for basic research Canada is not the place. The basic research is done in USA, while manufacturing is done in Canada. Hence the scope here is for basic manufacturing specialist, Quality Assurance and instrumentation specialist. If you can pick some Quality Skills in India, you would be able to survive the 3 year period for your citizenship and then move to US for doing research. Please note that another wave that is happening is that more and more Indian companies are setting shop in Canada, and hence you could contact some of these companies like Dr.Reddys, Ranbaxy for possible positions in their Canadian operations.
There is also a element of luck involved. The way Canadian setup works is by internal reference, it is not important whom you know, but who knows you in an organization to recommend you for a position. The best way is for you is do all possible research on Canadian Academia by internet from Delhi, write to them about your background, your research interests and keep communicating to them. Once you are ready to land you would be a known entity for them to talk to you.
Good Luck and God Bless!

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
