BL to answer the question posed by the author :-
Pakistani society is more conservative than India's (at least due to the religious aspect)
I suppose the dad does not want to expose his kids to the culture of dating, free sex,et al. here in Canada. Remember incidents of "honor killing" ? Similarly, he does not want to let go of Canada too, now that he is here (Futureshop, Walmart, Sears etc. ) .
I can understand his situation living in Calgary. The university is located in the North western part of Calgary..aka the posh area (with all the "gora's".. The desi hub is located in the North east, with a bunch of desi gang members also.

Unfortunately this argument and clash will always continue between a First and a Second generation desi here in Canada....The first generation like me can never fully understand CD's born here or CD's who came here when they were very young....one would always expect the other to equate to their own standards...standards would include choice of food, way of dressing up, accent in English, Hindi and Punjabi etc...it would be great if they match instantly but typically it wont....
However for a quick match, the best would be to marry or live with each other (I mean the1st and a 2nd gen CD's)...this would be the most effective technique by which a uniformity can be achieved....
The 2nd Gen would typically look upto the 1st Gen for facts and insights about India...The Ist gen would talk very proudly about his knowledge on India and would also gain control as if he is the guru on anything...in fact the genuine interest shown by the 2nd gen might be mistaken on a personal basis sometimes by the 1st gen...it takes a while to actually understand and interact....I have personally gone through all this and have reacted in different ways...anything from being affectionate to saying F.O...
Bottom Line....I have genuinely found it easier to interact with a Gora/ ri than a 2nd gen desi...and I meant "easier" and not "Prefer".

Ok but suppose the issue is about something mundane like food. Though other issues can be discussed out I have seen (and I myself experience) the desire to eat less Indian food and more other food. My spouse because he's born and raised in India could eat Indian food 3 meals a day/7 days a week. My formula is 3 meals a week/ 7 days a month
The reason I even mention food is that generally meals can be emotional, cultural and many family events centre around food.
What do you think?

I am not quite sure what the question was here but it seems like you are wondering how or why the eating habits differ between 1st gen CDs vs. 2nd gen CDs here?
I think that also depends on what's cooked at home. If a lot of desi food is being cooked at home, then you do tend to eat a lot of desi stuff compared to others who are not cooking it often in their homes. This is usually the case when you are younger.
When kids get older and are interacting with more and more people outside, they tend to lean towards what everybody else is eating.
Which brings us back again to the upbringing part... the way they are raised in terms of shoving cultural/traditional values down their throat or simply making them aware of it... the kids then either lean towards eating outside food or they lean towards eating desi food. That's a shady area I think. Because I've seen children who have just stepped out here from India and quickly adapt to eating outside and preferring that. And also a couple kids who have grown up here since early childhood, and they prefer to eat at home. (And also vice-versa). Go figure!
But I have to admit.... that people who have grown up here are more comfortable eating non-desi food than the ones who came here later on. As for me, I have haphazard ways of eating, so I can swing either way at any given time.
