Not just the middle east...
Read up on the Pakistani vice captain of the cricket team converting from Christianity to Muslim, keeping it secret for a few year etc...there are various theories floating around on that, but it certainly makes for interesting conspiracy material.

fyi: Not drawing a parallell but before you use the argument...no muslims in vatican city:
The vatican city population is about 1000 and mostly the clergy. Its a small enclave landlocked by Rome. Saying that there are no muslims in vatican city is like saying there are no Chirstians in AL-Haram mosque.

There is a thriving islamic population along with atleast one moque in Rome. Many more in the rest of Italy. I think the mosque in Rome is the biggest one of the 200+ mosques in Italy.
