I am sure most of u are following the story. If I understand it right, the 6 ports would be managed by a firm from UAE. Are the ports being privatized?
I am wondering why US based firms cant manage. The work is done in the ports not in some remote location (correct me here). May be we can see lot of desis (dock workers) being shipped to US from UAE.

My understanding is the ports were privatized already and were run by a british company. Americans had no issues when the ports were run by British. However, recently the british company was bought out by Dubai Ports World and hence got the rights to run the six ports viz New York, New Jersy, Philly, Miami and other two. Another complication is that Dubai Ports is owned by UAE govt.

The ports have been run by a British company for many years now.
The reason a lot of people are against it (70% by a recent poll) is because there is a perception that this increases the possibility of terrorism.
