Things are getting uglier...the war is spreading to Abkhazia. Ukraine has threatened Russia that Russia's black sea fleet will not be allowed back into their ports(they have been trying to get rid of that fleet for years). Russia is accusing Ukraine and turkey of arming Georgia. A real sh***storm.

The UN became a bloody joke when Bush invaded Afghanistan and they (the UN) did nothing.
Evil Smelly Taliban or not, nothing gives US the right to play "Big Brother" and impose their brand of "truth, justice and the American way" on the rest of the world.
When Bush invaded Iraq, the UN should have packed up their stuff and closed shop - they might as well. They are in the same "lame duck" position now that the so called "League of Nations" was in before the second world war.
Other countries will only follow America's example in mocking UN's authority.

Moralistic arguments about 'right' and wrong is just the solace of the armchair politicians. Realpolitik is hardly about it.
American self interests were asserted in invading Afghanistan(it was NATO not just America) and Iraq(though we are still debating this). Indian interests were also accomplished as far as Afghanistan is concerned. India has a friendly govt in Afghanistan with the same enemies as India. Moreover Indian companies have benefited from rebuilding Afghanistan too. India is actually safer due to the Taliban rout. ISI's gameplan now does not have the all the resources/safehouses of Afghanistan at its disposal. So really India is an indirect beneficiary of the whole situation in Afghanistan...e.g no more places to hijack planes and swap militants to for the terrorists.
Similarly Russia is asserting its self interests in its neighborhood. The Georgians were foolish in blatantly provoking the Russians...who only needed an excuse. I guess they were depending on the US. The US cannot militarily take on Russia currently. Putin knows there is significant opposition to even the Iraq war within America. He knows the US will have no stomach to take on Russia under such conditions.
I refuse the believe that the US did not know what was coming given the fact that the Russians were in striking position long before the event. I'm guessing Iran was the tradeoff. I could be wrong but I dont think the Iranians can count on Russian support anymore. The UN is a sideshow
...when both sides want a way out i.e when the Georgians have had enough(looks like it already) and Russia has accomplished its objectives(they are probably not done yet), then the UN will pass an article, signed by both parties that will ensure short term peace.-----------------------------------------------------------------

UN's authority was challenged a long time before US .... in Africa esp. Rawanada ... tinpot dictators commited genocide right under UN's nose and there was nothing they could do .... it was again repeated in other countries also. UN could not stop India from invading Pakistan in 1971 !!!
UN is as strong or weak as international community. Everyone who has the capability uses it for their own ends .....
